Hilliard is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 41,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Summit County. Settled by families of English and Scotch-Irish immigrants as early as 1795, Hilliard rapidly grew during the 19th century because of its position on the railroad and its location near various manufacturing points. In 1853, it became one of the original settlements in what would become Ohio. The city's economic fortunes began to decline after World War II when heavy industry left for greener pastures and then automation took over certain industries. However, Hilliard has since revived and began to experience significant growth in recent years thanks to new development along Interstate 470 and new job opportunities within retail and professional services sectors. The first permanent settler in what would become Hilliard was John Smyth who arrived with his family from Pennsylvania in 1795. Smyth built a log cabin on East Main Street which he named "Smyth's Tavern". By 1800, Smyth had two other homes in town - one called "Finch's Grove" (now part of Hillsboro) and another known as "Moses' Cabin", both located off US Route 131 north of downtown. By 1802, Smyth had begun trading goods with Native Americans living east of present day Cincinnati through an agreement called the Treaty of Greenville which ended a long conflict between Great British America and Native American nations west of Lake Erie. On July 16, 1803, US 2 (the present day US route 470) was cut through township boundaries from Delaware Township to form Cuyahoga County where it met Indian Creek just east of today's Hilliard
Hilliard was founded by George Hill in 1784. The town was named for General Thomas Hill, who helped lead the British Expedition against the French and lost his life in the Battle of Quebec. The first settler in Hillsville Township was Samuel Smith, who arrived in 1786. By 1811, there were 104 families living in Hillsville Township. In 1813, a post office was established at Hilliard; it operated until 1846. A fire destroyed many homes and businesses in Hillsville Township on October 25, 1814; however, no one was killed or injured as a result of the fire. The community of Hillsville continued to grow until it reached its present size by 1851.
