Hilliard began as two small villages: North Hillsborough and South Hillsborough. North Hillsborough was founded by Captain John Gillett in 1792 while South Hillsborough was founded by Captain Samuel Chapman in 1800. both villages were abandoned after their respective founders died or moved away. However, both towns continued to exist until they were merged into one large village called Hilliard on January 1st, 1820 under authority from Governor Thomas Lawrence. At this point, North Hillsborough became known as “the old town” while South Hillsborough took on the name “the new town” since it had been newly built since its merger with Hilliard. The merge created some interesting dynamics that continue to this day: While North Hillsborough enjoyed greater autonomy than South Hillsborough during their merger (i.e., they could have chosen their own mayor), they ultimately agreed to join forces with Cleveland in order to form what would become known as The Great Lakes Region which encompassed all of Ohio includingHilliard proper along with various nearby communities such as Youngstown and Mahoning County). Furthermore, during this time period there were no street numbers or zip codes – everything came out simply as “Hilliard”! This unique identifier has survived through more than three centuries and continues to be used today by residents in both citiesasihe towns surrounding them etcetera
