Hilliard, Ohio was founded in 1814 by James Hill. The city was named after General George Washington and the area around it became part of Ohio in 1821. The first knife factory in the area was opened in 1836 by John Pemberton. In 1865, a millinery shop was opened by Emma Atkins and another factory was started in 1879 by H.L. Briggs. In 1909, Goldschmidt & Sons began producing automobiles here and the city became known as one of the leading automotive manufacturing centers of its time.
Hilliard is a city in and the county seat of Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 44,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Summit County and on the border of Youngstown and Mahoning counties. The first permanent settler in Hilliard was Daniel Boone in 1786 who named it for General Washington's aide-de-camp, John Hill. A post office called Hilliard was established in 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1814, land east of town were purchased by Colonel George Rogers Clark for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ ). He named his new community Fort Henry after his old home state of Virginia. The City of Hilliard was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1829. In 1836, Ohioan Solomon Northup donated land north of town to become what is now Northumberland Township. When that township became part of Summit County they decided to name their new village New Harmony which still stands today as the main commercial center for the area. On July 4th 1870 Union Soldiers from Valley Forge Barracks marched through town celebrating America's victory over Mexico at Monterrey during the American Civil War while Mayor James Purdy rode along on horseback with them On October 1st 1870 New Harmony experienced its first tornado when a severe thunderstorm produced winds up to 130 mph (215 km/h). Over thirty homes were destroyed or damaged with several people killed within minutes In 1898 Hilliard voters approved incorporation as a city limits by an overwhelming margin with only one dissenting vote Mayor James Purdy served two terms from 1898 to 1906 before he ran for reelection as mayor again in 1906 but lost this time In 1912 ballot box stuffing allegations led to impeachment proceedings against Mayor Purdy . Ultimately no Charges were filed however public sentiment against him ran high culminating in him being impeached and removed from office

Hilliard was founded in 1810 by Capt. John Hill and his family. It became a village in 1892. In 1916 it became a city with a population of 30,362. On December 15, 2007 Hilliard lost its charter as an unincorporated community within Columbus Municipal District No. 5 due to vote by the citizens over concerns about city government's budget deficits and its lack of accountability to residents
