Hilliard, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 57,812 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. Hilliard was founded in 1800 by John Hilliard, an American Revolutionary War veteran and landowner who named his new community for his hometown of Hillington, England. By 1821, Hilliard had become a thriving town with a population of over 100 residents and two churches. In 1834, Hilliard became the first city in Ohio to be exempted from taxation by the General Assembly; this privilege allowed it to grow rapidly into an incorporated city with a population of over 500 citizens by 1840. In 1848, Hilliard became one of twenty-eight United States towns to become part of the newly created Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area through an act passed by Congress under President George Washington's Proclamation 10th anniversary celebration – making it one of the largest cities in America at that time! In 1902, Hilliard was renamed after its founder and namesake John Fenton Hillard (1801-1876), who served as mayor three times (1868-70; 1872-74; 1880). A year later, he was posthumously inducted into the Ohio Hall Of Fame. The following year saw another name change when Mayor Dolphus Crain moved from office to take up a position as Superintendent Of Schools for Muskegon County which included much more rural territory than what would be covered by Mahoning County until 1921 including parts now known as Hillsdale and Delaware counties eastward to Akron! When that position changed again in 1933 to Director Of Public Service For Warren County which included much more rural territory than what would be covered by Mahoning County until 1931 including parts now known as Summit and Medina counties westward to Ashtabula! Hilliard, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the United States. It was founded in 1814 by James Hilliard and his family. The community has experienced many changes over the years, including becoming a thriving city in the 1930s, a center for farming and manufacturing in the 1940s and 1950s, and then declining during the 1970s and 1980s as population shifted to larger cities. However, since 2000 it has been experiencing an identity resurgence as an arts destination thanks to its vibrant culture scene, its rich history, and its attractiveness to visitors. Hilliard was originally settled on a dairy farm located about two miles east of present-day Hilliard. In 1814, James Hilliard purchased land from John Hickman for $100. Over time, other settlers arrived and began working on the farm until it had twelve households with total production of cornmeal, flourishes such as cows and pigs, chickens (later replaced by dogs), butter churning equipment, saw blades (later replaced by hoes), horses (later replaced by cars), water pumps ( later replaced by ATVs ),and wagon wheels made from birch bark. By 1830 there were also homes for schoolteachers and farmers who rented out rooms or entire farms for overnight stays while they performed their agricultural labors. In 1835 James Hilliard built what became known as "The Great House" which stood on current-day State Road 724 north of town limits. This large 2-story brick structure featured six bedrooms/5 bathrooms with fine Georgian Revival features typical of early 19th century American homes such as arched doorwayways flanked by Ionic columns topped with pinnacles at each end; elaborate window shutters; marble mantelpiece; carved moldings; freestone fireplace mantelpiece beneath gilded doors leading into formal living room/dining room with grand staircase rising to second floor; wood panelled floors throughout main chamber save threeexpanded Rooms upstairs that opened onto large screened porch overlooking woodland beyond.[1] Illustrated plans from1835 show very similar architecture to that which still remains today although some modern alterations have been made: eaves are lower than they are now due to new code requirements,[2] gabled roof framed externally with full entablature instead of central pedimented veranda[3]; wide Palladian windows set deep within tall bays withoutinside fanlights below sills but high round arches above brackets ([4]), primary Corinthian colonnade ornamented only externally ([5]); all interior trim is finished in period style including original broad soffit balustrade detail along upper stories behind heavy dado moldings forming key element [6]; front door opens into formal living room flanked by two pairs of Corinthian pilasters supporting entablature terminating in satinwood return railings before massive frieze bearing somberly carved stone medallion depicting bust headdress associated with house property manager William Haddaway ; first floor includes two large Drawing Room Rooms plus one smaller Room used mainly as Bedroom because single story home could not hold more than ten people at one time[7]; conventional Windowsill Arches have deep internal cornices supported by brackets rather than flat masonry ground level support On July 1st , 1836 James' wife Rachel died suddenly while giving birth to their son Timothy age 5 months old followed 9 days later by daughter Emily aged 3 weeks old. The town grew quickly, becoming a center for the agricultural industry and eventually becoming the county seat of Mahoning County. In 1801, Ohio became a state, and Hilliard continued to grow as the state's capital. By 1860, the town had reached its peak as an industrial center with manufacturing companies such as American Can Company and United States Rubber Company based in downtown. However, during the Civil War, Hilliard was heavily destroyed by Union forces; only 8 percent of its buildings remain today.
