Hilliard, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 54,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Mahoning–area Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hilliard was founded in 1814 as a small village on the Scioto River by Loyalist settlers who fled to America following the British Invasion of Canada. The name Hilliard comes from an Englishman named John Hilliard who landed there in 1811 and built a cabin. After American independence was recognized in 1776, many Loyalists emigrated to North America and founded additional villages and townships throughout what is now Ohio including Hilliard. In 1814, George Washington visited Hilliard while he was on his way south for his inauguration as president and called it "a verypretty little town". During its early years, Hillsiard enjoyed some high-level commerce but declined after ceding its upstream sovereignty to Cleveland in 1835. By 1840, however, with increased trade between Cleveland and Pittsburgh thanks to railroad development within that region, new businesses had arisen around mills developed along the Scioto River by local farmers seeking competitive advantage over their opponents. In 1845 Congress created Cuyahoga County as one of twelve counties carved out of Pennsylvania during Congressional Reconstruction following the American Civil War. This act also made Cleveland its legal county seat; however much growth took place outside of downtown Cleveland until rail transportation became available which facilitated suburban growth northward into Cuyahaga County beginning in the late 19th century both through annexation by other municipalities as well as births of subdivisions specifically designed for this purpose such as Arlington Heights (1902) or Mayfield Heights (1910).
