It is the county seat of Hamilton County and covers an area of 41 square miles (114 square kilometers). In 1830-1832, Colonel Elijah Howe moved his family to Hilliard from Portsmouth, Virginia after serving as brigade commander during the Mexican–American War for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Army of Mexico. He opened a general store there in 1830 which became known as "The Howe Store". In 1840, he married Martha Ephraim (née Bowers) and they founded a home called "Hilliard Hall" on their farmstead north of town along State Route 6A/US 43 Business/. One year later they added another house on their lot – this time called "Hilliard House". In 1844-1846, Judge Samuel Purdy built a log courthouse on land donated by Jno Copley and others northeast of town on modern day US 21 south of Interstate 70; it served as both court house and jail until 1865 when it burned down due to weather conditions caused by heavy rains swollen rivers over time. From 1861-1865 three other courthouses were also constructed: one east off SR 6A/US 43 Business southwest corner into Trumbull County (near today's Akron), one northwest off SR 6A/US 43 Business near today's Defiance not far from where Hilliard High School stands today (it replaced an earlier schoolhouse), and one just east offSR 6A/US 43 Business two blocks southNW corner into Summit County near Wooster (rebuilt 1938). In addition to these three buildings some 40 buildings were erected throughout the city or surrounding rural areas during this period including schools, churches, stores etc.. Many people who lived here during this time also worked at these various construction projects such as plows operators etc... . After World War II many residents left for jobs outside Ohio because manufacturing jobs became available in neighboring Indiana or Michigan although much remains about this pioneer era including streets names etc... . For many years following World War II Hilliard enjoyed high levels of economic stability with few negative events taking place apart from slight decreases in population size over time through annexation by neighboring townships... . However since 2000s things have begun to change with more people moving here than ever before while smaller businesses have closed while crime rates continue to increase locally however overall life has become more difficult for most residents living here especially those making less than $30k annually according Today Hillard features 4 high school students per 1 employee which significantly impacts its economy however recent leadership changes may help reverse some trends
