Hilliard was founded in 1813 as a stop on the Natchez Trace Road. The town was named after Colonel John Hill (1762-1837), an early settler and developer of what is now Mahoning County. The first post office in Hilliard was established in 1814. The name of the town changed from "Hilleville" to "Hilliard" in 1824 when it became part of the new Northwest Territory under US President James K. Polk. In 1827, Hilliard annexed what are now neighboring townships: Green Township (now Delaware Township), Houghton Township (now Northumberland Township), and Park Township (now Westmoreland Township). In 1830, Hilliard incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000 residents and became one of the largest cities in Ohio until its annexation by Cleveland in 1907. In 1850, Hilliard voted to secede from Ohio and become an independent republic called the Republic of Texas; this event is sometimes considered to have started the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1860, however, following events within Texas that led to secession that year—the Lone Star Crisis—Hilliard re-joined Ohio and remained with the Union during the war effort. During Reconstruction era following Reconstruction efforts by both sides following America's civil war ended in 1865 – including death sentences for many Confederate officers—Hilliard quickly rebuilt and regained its status as one of America's most prosperous communities thanks to heavy investment by Yankees seeking reparations for their lost colonies during that time period known as Reconstruction South Hillsborough County OH

Hilliard is a town in and the county seat of Armstrong County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,521. Hill in 1814 as a post office and store on the Scioto Riverbank. The community became an agricultural center with many small farms that formed the nucleus of what is now Hilliard. In 1825, John Darragh began to build a sawmill on his farmstead just south of town. This mill rapidly became one of Ohio's leading commercial operations and helped create much local prosperity. Darragh also played an important role in developing Hilliard into an important educational community for its residents. In 1859, he donated land to establish Hillsdale College (now University Heights), which has been rually providing training opportunities for people from all over central Ohio since it was established. The railroad arrived in Hilliard in 1869 and soon made this agricultural center one of its most important economic sectors. Many businesses were created during this time including The Bluegrass Railroad Company (later part of CSX) which built tracks through town and connected with other large towns across centralOH via railroads; clothing manufacturer Mather & Son; glass manufacturer Sanger Bros.; insurance company Greenleaf & Co.; machine shop Prentice-Hall; bakery Brown’s Bake Shop; blacksmithing shop Donelson Forge & Iron Works; first electric streetcar line between Cleveland and Columbus called "The Electric Railway" opened on July 1, 1903 along Main Street; Pioneer Theatre opened on November 3, 1902 as one of two largest movie theaters west of Chicago serving Eastern Ohioan communities including Hilliard On October 25th 1906 at 6pm EST American civil war veteran General Ulysses S Grant visited town for dinner at Mrs Smiths home located on South Elm Street before driving back to Independence Hall in Philadelphia

Hilliard grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location on the banks of the Maumee River. By 1825, Hilliard had a population of 1,500 people and was known as one of the " thriving industrial towns." However, by 1830, Hilliard's growth had stopped and it became a small rural community.
