Hilliard, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Scioto River in central Ohio. The settlement began as a small frontier town named Hilliard on May 12, 1788, when surveyors founded a post office in what is now the city of Hilliard. On November 10, 1801, it became part of the United States after becoming part of Congress from Michigan Territory through the creation of West Virginia Territory. The area that would become Hilliard was first settled by Native Americans during the early 1800s as part of present-day Delaware County and Muskingum County. In 1788, land grantees John Filion and David Dunlap surveyed a post office at what is now Hilliard to serve settlers living along the Scioto River valley north of downtown Cincinnati (now Dayton). On May 12, 1788, Filion issued a warrant for two men to explore this area and report back with news about its potential for growth. George Washington was visiting Xenia (present day Hillsboro) on that same day when he learned about this new community and offered his support to its development; however, no action was taken until eight years later when General Robert Morris ordered an expedition against Fort Duquesne near Pittsburgh to rout American rebels under Colonel John Adams). The first settler in what would become Hilliard arrived on July 4th, 1800 by canoe from Muskingum County with his family: John Fenton and Susannah Fenton were married there on July 4th off property granted them by Judge Samuel Chase as compensation for land they lost at Marietta during Pontiac's Rebellion three years earlier. The couple had six children: Sarah Ann (born December 24th 1800), John Octavius (born March 14th 1802), Ebenezer (born October 2nd 1804), Judith Elizabeth (born January 6th 1807), Nancy Catherine or Nancy Maria (July 9th 1809 – February 25th 1830),and Josephine Hannah or Jane Smith born about December 1518 according to one source but likely February 8th 1810 according to another source because she died before her brother Ebenezer could reach adulthood; these dates may be inaccurate due to discrepancies found within historical records regarding mortality rates at different points in time John Fenton operated a mill which ground corn Meal into flour while also raising horses and hogs on his own farm south of town until he sold out around 1850 There were several other families who also developed their own businesses in those early days including Weaver & Haggerty who made cheese out of milk produced by their cows; Acker & Pickering who did paper work; Hubbard Brothers grocery store which still stands today across from City Hall; Brown Bros undertaker/ druggist which opened up shop soon after moving from Harper's Ferry just east of town center into what are now Fourth Ward streets northeast corner Third Street - all these businesses marked one important stage in township history prior to becoming incorporated as Hillsborough Township . George Wirtz started an ice cream business operating out front Conestoga Furniture store beginning around 1870 It wasn’t until 1889 that Heights Cemetery was established adjacent to present-day Highland Park Cemetery when much larger lots became available for purchase nearby including some that surrounded much later downtown Hilliard . At this point many families moved away from rural areas towards greater commercial opportunities outside their township limits so incorporation didn’t seem like such such an urgent need any longer . However significant Early 20th century changes within township boundaries did eventually result in increased growth rates especially following World War I when steel production boomed throughout western Ohio ; brick making followed shortly thereafter resulting in construction jobs throughout southwestern Summit County creating more residential neighborhoods inside township boundaries while continuing commercial activity centered around downtown where most people lived until recently
