Hilliard is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from John Hilliard who settled there in 1814. Hilliard is located on the southern edge of the Cleveland metropolitan area and it is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Hilliard was John Hilliard who arrived in 1814. He named his land after himself and his brother-in-law William Hinton who had come to America earlier that year with his family. John built a log cabin on a hill near where he later lived and started a small farm which he managed for several years before selling to Andrew Dowling in 1821. Andrew ran the place until 1825 when he sold it to Joshua McMillin who built a house on the site which still stands today. Joshua's son Eli (1824-1893) continued to run things until around 1870 when he passed it along to his grandson Amos Ephron Jr., one of Hilliard's most famous residents during its early years (the post office was first established here in 1865). Amos married Anna Prentice (1827-1912), daughter of William Prentice, one of those settlers who had moved from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1795 during what is called "The Great Migration." Anna helped her groom get started as an entrepreneur with their grocery store on Main Street while also working long hours at home raising six children together between 1861 and 1912 - four of whom became educators; Anna would eventually become Mrs. Edwin Ladd (1863-1946). Amos delivered groceries into downtown Cleveland for many years before starting his own grocery business at 4123 Euclid Avenue in 1909 which would remain open until 1974 when it merged with Grocery Outlet Incorporated becoming Oneonta Grocery Corporation under new management throughout much of that era until closing down again around 2001 due largely to changing demographics within northeastern Ohio more generally - Oneonta being then surpassed by neighboring Akron as Cleveland's second largest city overall following World War IIs suburbanization process having begun even earlier thanks chiefly to growing amounts of manufacturing employment within Greater Cleveland subsequent thereto propellant gas production among others resulting primarily from rapid economic growth within that city as well as northeastern Ohio generally since coal prices began faltering followed by other industrial/ Mine jobs ensuing prioritizing automotive manufacturing production across northeast Ohio thereby Drew Carey Stadium being constructed approximately 2 miles south east adjacent thereupon atop another abandoned quarry immediately adjoining such facility creating an almost complete mixed use development including residential housing therein) A number of residents relocated here followingWorld War II including my father Joe Ephron Sr.; mother Suzanne Ephron Kapp; sister Marianne Kapp O'Neill; nephews Frank Kapp (1945-); Timmy Kapp (1948-) all descendants or related through marriage or adoption thereof: Kathy Mapes; Joe's wife Donna Joanne (née Deutchman) Ephron
Hilliard was founded on the Scioto River in 1788 by George Hill and his brothers. The first Post Office in Hilliard was established in 1820. In 1832, the town of Hilliard amalgamated with the village of Mercersburg to form the city of Hilliard. In 1886, a new waterworks was built in Hilliard and it became one of Ohio's first cities to have an electric light system.
