In 1892, Hamilton, Ohio was home to one of the first scopes in the United States. The telescope, known as the Great Western Scope, was made by George Washington Gale and used to study optics at a local college. It remained in use until 1903. The Great Western Scope is one of only a few telescopes still in use today. The origins of modern scopes can be traced back to 1795 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed and built the world's first reflecting telescope, called the Antique Refractor or "Le Coudray". This instrument had a mirror that could be rotated so that it would point in any direction. However, due to its design flaw - it was not very stable - this telescope never came into widespread use. However, in 1802, British scientist James Clerk Maxwell developed what would become known as the electric field theory of light which explained how waves are created and transmitted through matter. This theory allowed for new ways of studying nature including creating images with scopes and detecting movement within fluids. By 1892, George Washington Gale had invented what is now known as the Great Western Scope which he used to study optics at a local college. In 1903, American astronomer Edwin Hubble observed nearby galaxies using his great white supergiant starlight microscope and discovered that they were much further away than previously thought. This discovery revolutionized astronomy and helped make space exploration possible!
