The first telescopes in Greenville were built by two men, Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Francois Pierre Latour. They built a pair of 6x50mm eyepieces and installed them on the roof of the local post office. The pair of scopes was used to view stars at night. In 1837, Dr. Benjamin Fenton purchased one of these scopes from Latour and started using it to study planetary astronomy. By 1848, he had built a larger telescope, the Taylorian Telescope, which allowed him to see objects as far away as Mars. He also discovered Sirius B in 1851. Between 1850 and 1860, other astronomers began using telescopes in Greenville for their research including John Herschel who used the Taylorian Telescope to discover asteroid 246 Palmyra in 1858; Augustus Beecher who used it to study star variability in 1862; and George Stephenson who used it to detect meteors during the 1863 Longitude Survey. In 1865, Dr. John Wesley Powell became interested in planets and studied celestial phenomena with his new Taylorian Telescope while living in Greenville. He eventually found Pluto when using it for his 1898–1901 mapping expedition!
Greenville, Ohio is a city in the Northeastern United States. The population was 22,569 at the 2010 census. It is the capital of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson County, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the South Carolina state line. The city was founded by planter James Hance in 1827 as part of a larger land grant to him from President George Washington. Hance named his new town after General Nathanael Greene, who had led American forces during the War of Independence. After Hance's death in 1828, his widow married John Sevier and they renamed their town after her husband's cousin and ally—Sir William Johnston (1788-1847). In 1850, Greenville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. In 1857 it became one of five cities in Anderson County that were consolidated with Spartanburg to form what would become South Carolina's first metropolitan area. Greenville annexed parts of Harrison Township in 1865 and 1886 from Sparta Township into its limits; these annexations are considered to be part of what makes Greenville unique as an independent city within a metropolitan area. Greenville was moved from its original site on Guinea Road between Booker T Washington Boulevard and US 27 midway through the 20th century because it conflicted with plans for Interstate 85 which crossed that road near GREENVILLE/US 27 junction. When I-85 was built, Greenville relocated about two miles westward along US 27 so that all traffic passing through the city could use then newly constructed ramps leading off I-85 eastward towards Spartanburg or Laurens County (or bypassing Greensboro altogether). To this day there remain some street namesakes associated with I-85 locations such as "I-285 Exit 313" and "Exit 340". According to The Dow Jones Newswires report dated October 15th, 2005 "the City government has invested over $4 million into infrastructure improvements including new sidewalks, bicycle lanes and public transportation kiosks",[1] These recent investments have helped make Greenville one of America’s most walkable cities by ranking second nationally behind Honolulu.[2] * This article does not mention any investment into green infrastructure like rain gardens or green roofs
