Greenville is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1801 by John Green and other settlers from Kentucky. The first store opened in 1812. By 1820, Greenville had a post office and three churches. In 1800, the Ohio General Assembly granted land to John Green for his town site on the Scioto River. After his death in 1802, his widow remarried and continued to live there with her new husband until their deaths in 1824 and 1830respectively. A second settler named Edward Foster moved into Greenville in 1830 after purchasing a piece of land from John Green's widow adjacent to what is now First Baptist Church . He erected a log cabin on what is now High Street . This cabin served as the first schoolhouse for students attending rural schools located within two miles of greenville until it burned down around 1840 In 1836, development began along High Street when William Hays imported 10 rods (0.50 acres) of sunflower seeds from Cleveland to be planted near what is now First Baptist Church .
