Greenville is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 16,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greenville were French traders and missionaries in 1795. In 1801, General James Wilkinson founded Greene County as a division of Fayette County in order to improve transportation routes between Cincinnati and Dayton. The county seat was located at Xenia until it moved to Greenville in 1903. In 1911, the town of Xenia became the first incorporated town in Butler County when it split from Greenville Township. Greenville was platted on November 8, 1805, by Nicholas Hennepin and Jedediah Clark for John Richardson of Detroit (then spelled de Witt). Richardson had come west to take possession of land that he thought would be available for settlement near his Native American village of Ottowa on Shiawassee River east of Cleveland. On December 7, 1805, while Hennepin was absent with his family on a trip back East from Ottawa River Expeditionary Force Commanding General Lewis Cass's expedition against the Shawnee Indians under Chief Pontiac's orders, Clark claimed title to all or part of that location north and west of where Hennepin had put down his claim two days earlier This location lay within present-day Butler County but also included parts of Trumbull and Fairfield Counties which later formed Delaware Township (now Vinton). The original plat included 36 lots However only eight were ever sold The plat was revised February 2nd1809 by George Canby who added one lot northeast cornerof Main Street & Third Avenue . On January 1st1810 Geo Witherspoon purchased lot No 12 from Nicholas Hennepin for $100 cash . He named it "Witherspoon's Purchase" after himself . Witherspoon may have been inspired by Peter Jennings' purchase three miles south-west of Xenia on July 3rd 1800 (Lot No 112) from Ebenezer Elliott for $125 cash .....In 1811 William Muhlenberg bought lots Nos 11 & 12 from Nicholas Hennepin for $105 each including water rights .....As early as 1802 there were references to an Indian trading post at this site.. It should be noted that no buildings still stand today related directly or indirectly to this important early history such as the old courthouse which burned down in 1906; although much has changed since then! Later History: After becoming a state charter township on March 30th 1912 due largely to pressure from residents speaking out against prohibitionist policies being enacted by then-Governor Andrew Johnson – Greenville quickly become an industrial center with heavy reliance upon agriculture production especially meatpacking plants built nearby including those operated by Smithfield Foods - among other major employers over time like Samuel Morse Cigar Works - manufacturing cigarettes until its closure around 1960s followed also several other small businesses before large government corporations took over most notably Coleman Technology starting up some 60 years ago today wrapper paper products etc., creating many high tech jobs throughout their extended product line development process! Much more recently major construction projects taking place such as plans underway now for a new civic center/park complete with office space/festivals etc., are testament not just to our thriving economy but how we've embraced sustainability initiatives across our community………. today’s citizens will continue living here through their children…..Municipal government began functioning Jan 1st 1914 thru Oct 31st 1915 following consolidation efforts led by Mayor Dolphus Swayne………Although most people refer simply to “Greenville” they should include portions lying within Trumbull Township plus Xenia during this time…………….Today’s downtown core includes Amherst Street NE corner First Ave NE sandwiched between Walnut Creek Rd & Reserve Road NW side along with numerous smaller blocks…..On October 31st 1915 incumbent Mayor Dolphus Swayne resigned effective immediately due political differences with future City Manager Willis Boren…………….Prior thereto Assistant City Manager Harry Welliver assumed mayoral duties…………………………………………………………………………………. viewtopic_id=6381&t=564930#p6381
