Greenville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The city was founded on November 3, 1814 by George Stephenson, who named it after himself and his home village of Greenville in South Carolina. The current population was 27,752 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Greenville was settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of the Shawnee Nation. On May 6, 1794, Colonel John Brown and his men massacred more than 150 unarmed Shawnee Indians near what is now Cincinnati while their allies were attending a peace conference at Saybrook Colony. After this massacre, General Anthony Wayne burned all evidence of Indian settlements in central Ohio during his campaign against those nations in 1795–96 known as The Great Northwest War (1792-1801). Greenville became an independent township on February 14, 1812 under the name of "Plymouth Township." It had a population of just over 100 when it was made a town on October 12th following ratification of an act by the general assembly to create Lucas County from parts west of Dayton including most of modern Toledo. In 1837 Greenville annexed what is now Delaware Township; its first mayor was Abram Gage Cooksey Sr.. In 1861 Greenville became one day's ride from Cincinnati through what is today Elyria; this distance has been shortened considerably since then but remains well within commuting range for many people today. Greenville, Ohio is a small town in the unincorporated area of Hamilton Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The name "Greenville" first appeared on maps in 1792 as part of the village of Greeneville and was changed to its current form in 1812 when it became a post office. The first settler in what is now Greenville was John Prentice, who built his house on the banks of the Cuyahoga River in 1792. In 1812, Greenville became a post office with James Henshaw as its first mail carrier. A store and tavern were built in 1824 by George Swayne and operated until 1827; then it burned down. A school was opened for students in 1830 by Reverend Ebenezer Whitehurst; it closed about 1840 because there were not enough pupils to warrant teaching by a full-time teacher. In 1850, Stone & Company erected a gristmill on Water Street which continued to be used until 1902 when it stopped being run due to heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew. The millstones that still stand today are from that mill and date back to 1800 BC according to some sources . There also has been mention of an early gristmill called Griggs Mill but this has yet to be confirmed or refuted fully. Another gristmill mentioned briefly but never actually built anywhere near where present day Greenville stands occurred somewhere around 1800 when Timothy Porter set up his sawmill adjacent to what is now US 15 southbound just north of present-day US 14 eastbound (now I-71). This mill however did not survive into modern times and disappeared after Porter's mill shut down due to competition from other mills started up nearby including one owned by John Dorman which eventually ceased operations too due mainly because of lack of water resources during prohibition years
