Greenville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Darke County. The population was 25,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first gun mags were established in Greenville by two brothers in 1855. The businesses which operated gun stores included guns, ammunition, and knivesmithing supplies; they were not just general store owners but also dealers in firearms and other items related to hunting and shooting sports. Shotguns were only available to customers who could afford to buy them outright or through subscription magazines like "The Rifleman" or "The shotguneer". In 1858, George Washington Dixon opened his first Pistol Emporium on High Street near where I-70 now meets US-422 (now Dayton Avenue). This early business allowed for both purchase and sale of pistols (and later shotguns) by private individuals as well as collective purchases by pistol clubs or hunting organizations. Dixon was followed by others including John Henson (1860), James Benge (1862-68), Peter Ladd (1872), Wm Fenton (1874), David Livingstone Craddock (1876-78), James Sprague Forbes Jr.(1880-82), Augustus Holmes Norton Jr.(184? - 1888?), and John Prentice Clarke(188? - 1897?). In 1892 JH&J & Co., manufacturers of rifles, imported 6 acres of land at 5th Meridian near Xenia for use as a rifle factory; this marked the beginning ofgun manufacturing in Greenville! When Prohibition began in 1919, many small Gun Magazines closed their doors due to lack of sales or licensing from local authorities. However some such as "American Rifleman" continued publishing until 1933 when it merged with other publications owned by Hearst Corporation to form the core Hearst Journalism Corporation monopoly on American published news media! Greenville, Ohio is a city in the Whiteside County, Ohio region of the United States. The population was 15,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–Ky., Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greenville was James Gentry who platted what would become Greenville in 1814. In 1837, John Beech arrived and laid out Beechtown on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Rossiter. In 1881, John Cockerill laid out Cedar Grove which became an urban district in 1903. In 1907, the village of West Wheeling was established within Greenville by consolidation of several smaller villages located east and west of it including Cedar Grove and East Wheeling. The village name was changed to West Orange in 1910 when it consolidated with another larger town to the north called Orange Park. At this time, both cities were part of Dayton-Middletown metropolitan area and are still considered as separate municipalities today. "Greenville" is derived from "Granville", one of several place names given to settlers early on in the community's history due to its location near a water body: "Greensburg Creek". The original grantees numbered only 22; all but five failed to arrive until after 1800 because transportation problems limited access to lands east of Chillicothe River during that era (the exceptions being two Scotsmen - Alexander Grant and Archibald Macdonald - who had married local women). A party led by General David Greene reached Granville on May 5th 1795 just before setting out for Cincinnati with supplies for American independence along with his brother-in-law Colonel Hamilton Morris (2nd Baronet) . After landing at what is now known as present day Liberty Village they built Fort Granvilles on high ground overlooking present day downtown where they met Indian Chief Muskingum's forces under Tecumseh’s orders defending their territory against British incursions during the Northwest Indian War (1795-1800). The first store in Greenville was built on Main Street in 1814. It functioned as a general store until about 1830 when navigation improved and there were no longer any need for a general store. A post office was established in Greenville on January 1, 1830, and remained open until 1959. The first school in Greenville was erected on East College Avenue in 1834; it served as a one-room school until 1840 when a two-room school building was erected. A four-story brick schoolhouse was constructed between 1840 and 1845; it served as the primary schools until 1939 when it burned down. A three-story frame barn replaced the original School House between 1945 and 1949; it still serves as the town hall today. Greenville has had several churches since its founding: First Baptist Church (founded c1836), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded c1850), Presbyterian Church (founded c1857), Congregationalist Church (founded c1874), Lutheran Churches ( founded 1865) and United Methodist Churches (founded 1903). The first doctor to practice medicine here was Drs John Smedley & Levi Coffin who arrived from Davenport, Iowa Territory on October 8th, 1847 He opened his dispensary/apothecary/drugstore at 9 SW 3rd St which he operated for over fifty years before selling out to Jens Wesselsbaldt on December 14th 1863 which closed up shop permanently September 26th 1870 after serving sixty years! About this time Dr George Ladd also opened up his pharmacy/ druggist business at 436 N High St which continued into the 1970's! Today there are several pharmacies open including Brown Pharmacy opposite Walmart where I purchase my medications! In 1861, Redeemer Presbyterian church cornerstone Journeyman’s Chapel with stained glass window dedicated to Rev Moses Norton consecrated with service by Rev Fenton Harper November 5th 1861 under direction of Rev David Rankin AGM November 12th 1861 . On May 6th 1865 Union soldier James Purnell living near community killed himself after being honorably discharged from army due to mental illness . His widow Anna Purnell moved into community with her six children following her husband’s death . James wife Anna raised five daughters who all attended Redeemer Presbyterian School adjacent to their home ....Today Anna's descendants are still active members of church .....On February 25th 1922 Reverend Vernon Hargrave officiated services at dedication of new rectory adjacent to current day high school ....The presentrectory date back to 1907 .....Redeemer Presbyterian congregation has been married twice ............First marriage:Rev Clements Beard Jun 15 1913 - Mrs Amelia Beasley Redeemed Separate Oct 1978 Second marriage:Rev Gershom Seymour Aug 19 1967 -Patricia Seymour
