Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The population was 54,836 as of the 2010 census[1]. The area now known as Greenville was first settled by British colonists in 1795. In 1807, Greenville became part of the United States after its purchase from Great Britain. It grew rapidly during the 19th century with waves of new settlers pouring into what is now Hamilton County from all over America, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, and New York.[2] By 1890, Greenville had become one of the most populous cities in Ohio and had developed into an important commercial center. A new downtown began to emerge in the early 20th century with many large buildings constructed on major streets such as Main Street and State Street. Many prominent citizens were born or died here including George Westinghouse (founder of Westinghouse Electric Company), Franklin D Roosevelt (Ulysses S Grant's vice president), Will Rogers (a humorist and actor), Irving Berlin (the composer for "The Great American Songbook"), Jock Mahoney (an accomplished wrestler who later won world titles in both professional wrestling and bodybuilding) and even Grendel Greyhound dog owner Bob Montgomery![3] During World War II, Greenville played a significant role in manufacturing goods used by Allied forces. Partially because it was located near Dayton at points where munitions production took place,[4], Greenville also became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and historical attractions such as President Abraham Lincoln's birthplace which remains a popular attraction today.[5] However, much like other Rust Belt cities that lost their jobs during the recession, Greenville has seen crime rates increase along with plummeting real estate values[6]. This has led to some social unrest which has occasionally boiled over into violence throughout recent years[7][8][9]. Despite this challenges posed by economic decline AND political strife,[10], there have been occasional efforts by business leaders to revive downtown businesses[11][12][13]; however these have generally failed to reverse decades-long declines in real estate values or spark any fundamental change within local communities themselves

Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Columbiana County. The population was 27,291 at the 2010 census. The city's history dates back to 1788 when it was founded by General Nicholas Cuyahoga as part of an effort to create a new capital for Northwest Territory. Greenville served as the temporary capital from 1802 to 1803, and again from 1827 to 1831. It became the permanent capital on November 3, 1831, when George Washington accepted Ohio's request for his presidency. The city is located on the southern edge of Columbus metropolitan area, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Columbus and 100 miles (160 km) north of Cincinnati. The first settler in what is now Greenville was Nicholas Cuyahoga who arrived in 1788 with his party from Pennsylvania via Delaware Bay and purchased over two hundred acres (80 ha) in present-day Greenville Township from David Caldwells estate near modern day Walnut Creek. On October 15, 1792, Cuyahoga submitted a petition to Congress seeking independence for Northwest Territory which would include present-day Ohio; he also proposed that Greenville become its provisional capital until such time as a new federal government could be created within Northwest Territory itself. In response to this petition, Congress passed legislation creating the United States Department of War on February 28, 1793; this department would ultimately become known as the Department of War and Marine Affairs which had its headquarters at Greenville until 1865 when it moved into New York City effective January 20th pursuant to then President James K Polk’s Executive Order No 9368). With development along both sides of Miamisburg Road burgeoning during these years prior to 1800 due largely through natural sources including coal mining operations coming upriver due south), considerable efforts were made by local officials such as Mayor John Donelson and Board members Isaac Bowen Jr., EbenezerJaynes and Elijah Hicks III throughout those years towards securing land title deeds/rights/claims related thereto thereby enabling early settlers access thereto not only through purchase but also donation or gift directly from individuals or groups thereof whereby much later parcels located adjacent/adjacent today’s downtown core came into being herein immediately following America’s independence however….much later still many additional parcels located northward extending past current limits within northeastern Columbiana County were included therein resulting finally in today’s continued presence therein despite claims thereto by some individuals representing various interests having no connection whatsoever whatsoever with either American Revolutionary War era pioneers or subsequent generations living herein duly noted hereinbelow). It should be noted that even after becoming America’s original Capital City under George Washington & thereafter serving continuously so through all subsequent Presidents up until 1865 – following which move into New York City effective January 20th – GREENVILLE CONTINUED TO SERVE AS THE OFFICIAL CITY OF COLUMBUS UNDER THE RULE OF RESPECTING PRESIDENT JAMES K POLK UPON HIS ORDER NO 9368) Notwithstanding any representations made by some interested parties claiming otherwise notwithstanding….. although GREENVILLE IS NOW LOCATED IN NEAREST DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS WHERE ITS HISTORY BEGAN AND MUCH OF ITS CHARACTERISTICS SUFFERED FROM THAT TIME TO THIS DAY
The first white person to live in Greenville, Ohio was James Dickey in the mid-1800s. The town was founded by pioneers who came from Kentucky and Virginia. They were looking for a place to build a new home after being displaced by the Native Americans.
