The area around Greenville was first settled by Europeans in the early 18th century as part of what is now Hamilton County. In 1795, General George Washington erected a toll bridge over the Scioto River here to collect revenue from Native Americans living along that stretch of river. The townspeople quickly began calling their new settlement "Greenville" after General Washington's headquarters east of Ottawa on High Street (now known as Jameson Avenue). In 1801, when Ohio became a slave state, Greenville became a free state under Kentucky law. So free were its slaves that they elected their own mayor in 1807-08; however, this practice stopped after Kentucky abolished slavery in 1829. In 1830, when Cincinnati annexed Westmoreland County into its boundaries, it included much of what is now Greene County within its limits; so when Westmoreland county became a part of Indiana in 1845, Greene County remained within Indiana but with an Indian reservation comprising much of its territory until 1863 when all Indian reservations were taken away by newly constituted Indiana as part of the Indian Removal Act – which began Apalachicola Territory’s processof becoming open land for white settlers without compensation to native nations such as Cherokee and Seminole people). The townspeople built some miles beyond where they currently sit on I-80/US-19 what are today North Side Drive and South Side Drive (the original route) because no other spot would provide access to both sides of I-80/US-19 at that point in history! This allowed them more control over their town - even though commercial development did not start until about 1940 thanks to Interstate 70 being built just south off US-19

In 1801, John Pritchard founded the village of Greenville on land that now includes much of downtown Greenville. A post office was established in 1802 and remained open until 1913. In 1830, James Kneipp came to Greenville from Wauseon Township and founded Kneipp's Mills which remains one of the most important retail districts in central Ohio today. The first school was built in 1830 by David Trimble and it is still used today as Graded School 6th & High School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a city on May 15, 1836. On July 1st of that year they made history when they became one of only two cities in Ohio to be chartered with an charter giving them exclusive rights to levy their own taxes without having to get approval from their neighboring townships or counties! They continued this formative role throughout their early years with many political clashes over issues such as building a canal across what would become Euclid Heights (now known as Grant Park). The city finally achieved its current nickname "The City on the Hill" upon annexation into Cleveland proper in 1892 due largely to contributions by General Electric co-founder Samuel Insull Sr., president pro tem for Cleveland County during that time! After years of growth spurred by manufacturing and other industries which created CASE ( chlorofluorocarbons ) plants all around town including a HVAC plant built just south of downtown serving everything from single family homes up into multiunit buildings alladinear to high tech companies like Apple Inc., Carrier Corp., Nike Inc., IBM etc –Greenville reached its peak during World War II with aircraft production being located adjacent to Case Steel Works while shipbuilding took place adjacent to Halsey Shipyards across Clinton Ave/Highland Ave from 1945 until 1990 when those operations were moved inland into Bay View Yards near Strongs Creek! But alas…the good times didn’t last long….national debt incurred during Vietnam led directly to bankruptcy within 2 years followed by generations OF layoffs at both Case Steel Works and Halsey Shipyards – further straining local resources while also contributing significantly To mass unemployment indexing nationally! That wasn’t it though; not even close; things got really tough right after that because there simply wasn’t anything left worth investing capital into once again leading eventually TO Greenville becoming an “urban blighted area” characterized by crime rates consistently outpacing average neighborhood values…..but hey; life goes on ain’t nobody ever perfect right?
