Grant's inauguration but McKinley objected because he felt that Columbus should be given preference over Greenville due to its strategic location on navigable waterways as well as its history as a center for education and industry. A compromise was reached which awarded Columbus first choice but allowed McKinley to attend if he could guarantee that he would not allowGrant to face any challenges during his term as president from Cincinnati or Pittsburgh (the other two formal sites proposed for inauguration). Today, Greenville is one of several nodes along Interstate 275 where people can experience many aspects of American culture including music venues such as FirstEnergy Stadium and Quicken Loans Arena; restaurants such as Denny's and Red Lobster; shopping districts such as Midtown Shopping Center; industrial areas including Shoe Park Square;and professional sports teams like the Cleveland Browns (American football) and Columbus Blue Jackets (hockey).

However, during World War II much of Greenville’s manufacturing output went into support of the war effort; its numerous factories produced munitions including tanks and artillery shells as well as aircraft parts and engines
