Greenville is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,893 at the 2000 census. The town center is located at the intersection of State Route 137 and US-14. The first people to live in what is now Greenville were French colonists who arrived in 1795. They named the area "Nova Scotia" because of its resemblance to that country. In 1812, Daniel Boone moved from Kentucky to this area and built his home on the banks of the Scioto River. He named his new settlement "Greenville" after General James Harnett's brigade which he had helped defeat at Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1813. Greenville was platted in 1827 by commissioners John Sibley and Ebenezer Duke with land grants from President James K. Polk. It became a part of Stark County when it was formed on January 1, 1837. On December 12, 1850, Greenville voted to become a city under the provisions of the Act forthe organization of cities within our present state; and on March 14th thereof Cincinnatus Green (the celebrated projector) was elected Mayor &c., etc., without opposition or solicitation from any body whatever! In 1870, Greenville voters passed an ordinance establishing public schools through all wards as well as providing for boarding schools for poor children; this program continues today through Boarding Schools Incorporated (BIS). On July 4th 1909 local residents erected an 8-foot high granite statue honoring their fallen military service members killed during World War I (). This monument still stands today adjacent to Veterans Memorial Parkway off SR 145 North near CR 511 East outside of downtown Greenville

Greenville was founded in 1788 by Colonel George Washington. The town was named for the natural vegetation of the area: "Grayson's Forest" refers to a tract of land that included much of what is now Greenville, Ohio today. The original settler were Quakers and they used the forest as their grazing grounds. In 1812, Greenville became part of the United States and in 1815 it incorporated as a village. It had a population of about 100 people in 1830. In 1834, two miles east of present-day Greenville on State Route 9 there was an extensive iron mine called the Open Pit Iron Mine which operated until 1907 when ownership passed to the Miamisburg Mining Company; this mine yielded significant amounts of iron ore that has since been shipped away for processing into other materials like steel and aluminum. In 1865, Greenville became state capital because Columbus had burned down during the American Civil War (1861-1865). It remained an important city through most of Ohio's Reconstruction period from 1865-1879; however, it lost its status as capital after Cleveland reoccupied it in 1879 due to financial problems at that time. In 1924, Cincinnati annexed much of what is now northeast Dayton with GreensVILLE remaining an enclave within Cincinnati until 1959 when it merged with nearby southside Dayton to form one large city again – not including GreensVILLE – making GreensVILLE one of five cities in Ohio designated as “ metropolitan areas” by then Governor James Rhodes Wilson following his recommendations from his Commission on Regional Housing Programs (1928). In 2002, when Time Warner bought AOL/Time Warner Cable, parts or all of GreensVILLE were sold off to Charter Communications who continue using it primarily for data services although some retail stores are still open there today adjacent to Interstate 270 which runs thru downtown Cincinnati proper between FirstEnergy Stadium and Riverfront Park (site where Progressive Field currently stands)).
