Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Holmes County. The population was 17,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Cleveland, west of its metropolitan area, and east of Akron. The first Europeans to visit Greenville were Frenchmen in 1688 and Englishman James Haldane in 1795. The town was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1796 as part of the Purchase Land Programme that included land grants to prominent European families including Vincenzo Corlett, John Dickson and Nicholas-Jacques Conte. Greenville's growth was rapid due to its location on the newly opened soil between two major corn production areas – those led by Daniel Boone in western Ohio and those led by George Rogers Clark in central Ohio – as well as its natural resources such as timber, coal and water power. In 1814, United States forces under General Andrew Jackson burned down part of what is now downtown Greenville after capturing an Indian village near present-day Uniontown while occupying that region during his Expedition against Indians known as the Seminole Wars. In 1825–26, Greenville became one of thirteen townships within Holmes County when it was created from parts of Chardon Township, Stark County and Medina Township, Ashtabula County following a system change prescribed by President James Ketchikan pursuant to the Organic Laws Of Upper Canada (1784). Greenville's incorporation as a city occurred on February 12, 1868 through an act approved by Mayor Jno Wofford with advice from a committee chaired by Senator Lazarus Biddle. At this time there were only six cities within Ohio: Athens/Athens Falls (1815), Cincinnati (1819), Cleveland (1824), Toledo (1829), Youngstown/Warren ( 1830) and Dayton/Daytona Beach (1835). During World War II many companies operated out of Greenville plants including Revell Aircraft Co., Grumman Aircraft Corp., Ford Motor Company’s “Ace” Division Headquarters during World War II; Ball Corporation Aviation; Hammond Rubber & Rubber Products; Bethlehem Steel Corporation; Maytag Manufacturing Company Inc.; Wartime Electric Supply Depot #4 for GMC trucks

During World War II, Greenville played an important role as one of Ohio's largest steel towns due to its production of munitions and other materials necessary for war effort. After the war, many manufacturing jobs replaced those lost at the mills but did not last long because of competition from overseas companies that could produce more cheaply than American manufacturers. In recent years, health care has become an important economic force within Greenville thanks to its location within close proximity to major hospitals and clinics as well as nearby universities which allow for increasing medical research and development activity around town .
Greenville was founded in 1795 by George Washington as a small village on the Scioto River. The Village of Greenville was renamed Columbus in 1814 and it became the city of Columbus in 1871. On November 16, 1918, during World War I, the United States successfully attacked and destroyed the German Fort Osterhausen in Greenville.
