All three towns were founded by Europeans seeking to populate areas now served by Columbus as new settlements after the Ohio River emptied into Illinois following the American Revolution. By 1840, these villages had all grown sufficiently large to be chartered municipalities with their own governments and court systems separate from those of their local counties; however, they continued to rely on county services such as roads and schools. Whitehall – founded by George Washington Carver – became one of central Ohio’s most important agricultural communities due to its extensive cornfields and cattle herds; Bellevue grew rapidly as a result of its location on high ground above the Delaware River between Newark and Cincinnati; Westerville emerged as a manufacturing center during the mid-19th century because of its production of textiles and other products such as soapstone
Green, Ohio was founded in 1813 by Peter Nice. It became a county in 1869 and an independent city in 1903. The city was renamed Cleveland on July 6, 1907.
