Green, Ohio is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. Green is located on the Scioto River about 20 miles (32 km) west of Cleveland. The first settlers in what is now Green were farmers who came to the area in 1810 from Pennsylvania. Although land was available for farming and grazing, there was little timber or other resources available to build homes or settle down. However, over time residents turned to farming because of its opportunities for income and access to water supplies. By 1870 most of the original settlers had died from disease brought by pioneers who had come before them as well as during the Indian Wars that followed when western Ohio became part of the United States. The town of Green began to form around 1881 when two groups of people united under the leadership of John Prentice and James Fenton to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) northeast of present-day Green on which they built a bark-and-metal cottage known as "Prentice's Harbor." The name green may have been chosen because it was thought that this location would be especially friendly to animals due to its rich topsoil rich in humus content and large trees surrounding it. One theory suggests that early settlers named their towns after plants or flowers that grew near them such as onion, daisy, lily etc., but no clear evidence exists support this hypothesis. In 1907 local resident John Gaddis donated land across from Prentice's Harbor so that a public park could be established there also called Gaddis Park today with an open field behind it which has been home to baseball games and concerts since 1928. In 1916 an enlarged version of Gaddis Park became Lewis Fieldhouse which seats 6,000 spectators and hosts annual high school football championships while being used also for ice hockey events held here annually since 1978; current facility includes three soccer fields/homeschooling courts/a gymnasium addition completed in 2006 On July 1st 1889 Green became one OFHSA free agent city charter member #1 meaning all citizens were given full voting rights including women until disbandment by state government in 1903 along with many other rural communities withinOHSA
