Green, Ohio is a city in the United States that is located on the eastern edge of the state of Ohio. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Green was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1825, John Marshall donated land to make up part of Cleveland and west side Township had its start in 1827 when James K. Polk became General Governor and chose to divide what are today's downtown Cleveland and east side Township into two parts with different names: "Cleveland" (west Side) and "Green". In 1840, Green was organized as an independent township within Cleveland County. It merged with other townships within Cleveland County in 1854. In 1896, Green lost its status as an independent township when it joined the newly created city of Cleveland proper. At this time it became one of fourteen wards in Cleveland City Hall; each ward represented an area including businesses on both sides of Market Street between Superior Avenue and Euclid Avenue (now University Circle). The original wards werenumbered 1-14 but they were reorganized into their current order in 1907 when Brownsville Ward was added from Essex County along with neighbouring Uniontown and Wyoming Ward (all from Cuyahoga County). As part of the merger, all but two streets in GREEN were renamed after people or organizations who had played some role in shaping or leading Cleveland during its formative years: George Washington Carver for agriculture; William McKinley for politics; Art Moderne architecture for commerce; Detroit Pistons basketball player Julius Erving for community service/promotion; Franklin D. Roosevelt for president (1940-1945); etc.; while Bankside Ward continued to be numbered 15 until it was disbanded following the 1980 Census because IBM no longer operated a plant thereon after that company relocated to Arvind Kejriwal’s software development center on Iyer Road outside Mumbai.)
