Green, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Muskingum County. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, up from 472 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The area that would become Green was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of what is now Muskingum County. The town of Greenville was founded in 1802 on land donated by Jesse Benton and others, and it became a town within Muskingum County when it was organized on February 15, 1803. By 1821, Green had about 200 residents and two churches. In 1840, Green moved to its present site where it has remained since; main streets were named for Revolutionary War veterans who fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1775), Battle of Steubenville (1813), Battle of Perryville (1814), and Siege of Yorktown (1781). In 1830, Green became an incorporated village under the original charter granted to it by then-County Treasurer James Wilkinson Sr.. The village had a total population of about 110 people; however, because incorporation did not allow for fire department or public square until 1 January 1840, this community failed to achieve any major milestones until after that date. In 1850, while still an incorporated village, Green erected its first schoolhouse which remain standing today as a contributing property to OSU's Main Campus complex on North High Street near downtown Cleveland - one block south of Euclid Avenue between State Street (then known as Public Square) and First National Bank Building (now Tower Place Shopping Center). That same year also saw the establishment by local trustees/officers – including Mr. Wilkinson himself –of a Board OF Education with responsibility for educating all children living within Muskingum County subject to tribute from parents or guardians “for good behavior” without attending school themselves... GREEN SCHOOL DISTRICT No later than July 3rd 1860!!! This marks just how quickly things changed for our little town during this time period! A few years later on December 20th 1860 GREEN SCHOOL DISTRICT #1Was established !!! With such quick changes taking place we can only imagine what life must have been like back then without all these governing bodies set up

Green is located on the northern edge of the Dayton metropolitan area and is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–DaytonRegion Combined Statistical Area. It was named after two parcels of land that were part of an 1811 purchase by Colonel George Rogers Clark from Anthony Wayne. The first permanent settler in Green was John Toombs, who arrived in 1797. Other early settlers included Major General James Wilkinson and his family, who founded Wilkinson's Mills in 1802; Solomon Aspinwall, who arrived in 1800; Peter Lalor and his family, who settled near what is now Liberty University; Moses Sheppard, Jr., who came to Green between 1807 and 1809; David Bogue, Sr., who immigrated to America in 1814; Benjamin Banneker, Jr., who arrived in 1830 from England. Green became a town on November 3rd, 1800 when it was organized as a village under legislation approved by Congress at that time: "An act for establishing a town government within this state." The first mayor was Sylvester Mifflin (1796-1847). On December 11th of that year voters approved an ordinance providing for a one-term limit on mayors and for elections every six months instead of annually In 1902 Greene annexed portions of neighboring Union Township. In 1906 Greene reincorporated as a city with its own ordinances and government On January 1st 1907 Mayor William Haddock resigned due to ill health One hundred years ago today (January 1st 1903), President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated green park across street from White House as Presidents Park Today Green has over 21000 residents with over 300 businesses
