In 1812, General James Wilkinson purchased over 5 acres of land from Nicholas Payne to build what became Green Township. The township was ceded by Great Britain to America on February 14, 1817. Green Township was renamed Green County on December 12, 1837, after General William Heathcote's victory at Lake Erie against Tecumseh's forces. The first post office in Green County opened in 1840 and remained open until 1907. The township took its name from the green trees that grew there and were used for fuel for cooking and heating purposes. Today, many small businesses dot the landscape near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport as well as around other areas within Greater Cleveland; some have been here since before Green Township began serving them!
