Girard is a small community located in the northwest corner of the state of Ohio, on the Scioto River. The population was 4,711 as of the 2010 census. Girard is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Girard was Abram Marsh who arrived in 1797. In 1802, John Marshall came and founded Marshville. On December 5, 1830, David Swayne bought land from George Washington Lewis and erected a log cabin on what is now known as Swayne's Hill. In 1831-32 Isaac Morse built a house and store on Main Street which became the nucleus of Girard. In 1836-37, Jesse Couch built a frame church at Third and Elm Streets which served as the town's first courthouse until it was replaced by Courthouse Square in 1840. In 1850-51 Daniel Ladd purchased some additional land adjacent to Main Street for future development including what is now Bankston Road. By 1870 there were 9 dwellings with an aggregate value of $4,711 (2005 dollars). In 1865-66 Airedale Colburn started building a flour mill on Little Miami Creek near present day Girard High School; this mill continued operations until 1971 when it closed due to water damage. The milling process used large wooden pails that would be filled with flour powder and then boiled before being drained off leaving behind lumps or fines which were then dried for storage or consumption On July 6th, 1888 Wm Fenton became one thousandth voter in Girard Township when he registered to vote at Ford’s Store #2 along Maple Street Girard Township was organized on November 3rd, 1892 by Commissioners Hagenbach & Murchison with boundaries extending northward from First Avenue east to Second Avenue southward to Centre Road . The name “Girard” was chosen because its original owner had been Abram Marsh who donated land for township purposes . There are three homes still standing from early days: Mr & Mrs Dickey’s home at Third and Elm streets; Mrs Kapp’s home at Fourth and Elm streets; Dr Biddle’s house at Fifth and Elm streets As Girard grew larger more businesses appeared such as J C Meyers grocery store(now defunct), Ford’s Store #2(now defunct), Salerno Bros bakery (closed down), Geddes drugstore(closed down) among others . Also during these years heavy industry began moving into town including metal manufacturing plants such as American Metal Works(closed down) while other smaller companies relocated such as Amalgamated Rubber Company(closed down). With increased industrial activity came increased traffic congestion resulting in many businesses closing their doors over time making downtown much less vibrant than it once was . However through concerted efforts by city officials over time downtown redevelopment has begun taking hold providing new shops and restaurants along with new housing developments causing much rejoicing within the community today

Girard was founded in 1783 by James Girard and his wife Judith. The village was named for James Girard, who had donated the land for it. It grew quickly, and by 1802 had a population of about 150 people. By 1830, however, Girard's growth had slowed to a trickle. In 1837, John Broughton purchased the land around Girard from James Girard and built what is now known as Broughton Hall. He continued to operate the hall until his death in 1862. The village experienced some major growth during the late 19th century; in 1892 it had a population of 2,500 people. However, this growth stopped abruptly during World War I and World War II because of lack of resources. In the postwar years, there was modest growth until 1990 when the population reached 10,000 people again. Since 2000, there have been several attempts to revive interest in Girard; these have failed though Occasionally community events are held with some success such as summer concerts or farmer's markets
