Girard was a small town located in the unincorporated area of Trumbull County, Ohio, about 25 miles southwest of Cleveland. On December 12, 1892, Girard residents voted to incorporate as a village. The first post office was opened in Girard on May 1, 1893. The town's namesake is Samuel Girard (1783-1862), an early settler and surveyor who platted what is now Girard Township on the Scioto River. Girard's economy fluctuated during the early years of its existence; however, by 1910 it had become one of the community's main sources of income from agriculture and manufacturing. In that year, the Girarde Manufacturing Company became one of the largest manufacturers in Trumbull County with operations at three locations: Girarde, Bedford Heights andWooster. As industry declined throughout much of the 20th century, so did Girard's population; however, due to its location within easy driving distance for many people in central Ohio, it has remained an important center for culture and education in recent decades.
