Girard, Ohio is a small town located in the southern part of the United States. It is known for its rifle and pistol shooting ranges, as well as its history with target holders. Girard was founded in 1875 by John H. Girard and his family. The first range opened on a property that is now known as Girard Elementary School. The range has been used by both recreational shooters and professional shooters over the years. The early target holders in Girard were members of the Rifle Club of America (RCA). In 1906, RCA merged with the American Rifle Association (ARSA). At first, ARSA allowed only men to use their ranges. However, after some women became involved in shooting, ARSA changed its policy so that women could also use their ranges. Throughout the years, there have been many different target holders who have come to work at or visit Girard Range. Some of these people include: Bob Tilton (1921-2001), Don White (1941-2007), Dick Sargent (1960-2015), Ron Dayhoff (1972-present), and Rick Herrington (1976-2009). Many of these individuals have contributed to the growth and development of targetHoldersUSA® since its inception in 1986. Girard was founded in 1814 by French Canadian immigrants Pierre-André Girard and his wife Marie-Josephine Leduc. The first store in Girard was opened by Hiram Silliman on May 12, 1815. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of 2,000. In 1881 Girard had a population of 912 and became an incorporated village. In 1907 it united with nearby Sandusky to become Girard-Sandusky Township. The township seat moved from Girard to Sandusky in 1937; however, the village continued to exist as an independent municipality until its merger into the township two years later. Girard was founded in 1810 by George Girard and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the French agriculturist Jean-Baptiste Girard. The first home in Girard was built on a parcel of land that had been donated to the town by Reverend John McLoughlin. In 1812, the Girards erected a log cabin at what is now the junction of Elm and Market streets. They also started a small store to sell goods from their farmstead. The first school in Girard was built in 1814. It served as a Kindergarten through 12th grade until 1828 when it became an Elementary School. In 1829, George Girard died and his widow took over management of the school with her son, Jotham Dickey Jr.. She continued to run it until her death in 1862. After her death, it passed through several families before being purchased by James Fenton who kept it for 38 years before selling it to William Hoke in 1888. In 1902, there were only 10 people living in Girard while total population was 581; however by 1910, its population had increased to 1,500! By 1922, there were 2 stores and 14 homes; however its population decreased again during World War II due to lack of demand for goods produced within the city limits
