Girard was a small community located in the northwest corner of Ohio, about 12 miles south of Springfield. It was founded by French colonists in 1798 and named for Jean-Baptiste Girard, an officer in the French Revolutionary War who had served in the expedition against Great Britain that resulted in the Treaty of Paris. The community developed around two churches and a school. The first church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built in 1812 and became known as Church Pointe. The second church, dedicated to Notre Dame de Nazareth, was built on what is now Main Street in 1868. In 1892, Girard had a post office and saw its first mail service to other parts of Ohio. In 1902, Girard had a population of 128 people; by 1960 it had fallen to just 44 people. However, it began to rebound after economic recession caused by World War II and slowly regained its former stature as an agricultural town with several farms and some modest businesses. In 1972, Girard merged with neighboring towns Springboro (to the east) and Dayton (to the west). With this merger came increased competition for development resources among the three communities whichresulted in shrinking populations but also changed their character somewhat from agricultural village into more suburban-oriented villages with larger homesand less agriculture associated with them. Today Girard remains primarily an agricultural town though there are limited efforts being made to revive its economy or attract new residents back to it because most residents continue to reside near Springfield or Dayton proper. Despite these limitations however, Girard has significant remaining historical significance due both to its unique history - which includes ties to France and America - as well as its current role within local government affairs surroundingSpringfield/Dayton Township and Kent County OH respectively
