Girard was founded in 1801 by John Girard and his wife, Margaret. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste Girard, a French Revolutionary general and statesman who served as the President of the United States from 1789 to 1793. The Girard brothers were some of the first settlers in what is now Girard Township. They built a small cabin on the edge of what is now their property and started trading goods with other settlers. In 1814, John died and his brother, Nicholas, took over management of the town. Nicholas had two daughters, Sarah and Maria, who began helping run the store and farm while also teaching physical education classes to young children in the community. After Sarah's death in 1836, Maria assumed guardianship of the children until they reached adulthood. In 1839, Anthony Ruffin purchased land east of town from Nicholas Girard for $5 per acre. He began expanding his holdings by buying more land until he had all of present-day Girard Township. Ruffin became one of local leaders during the early days of Ohio Confederation and helped found Athens College which later became Ohio State University. He also built several homes in Girard Township including one which remains standing today known as Mr. Ruffin House (the original home still stands within modern day Girard). Ruffin was an important figure in both American history and local government during his lifetime. He contributed significantly to building up nearby Athens College as well as developing many civic amenities within Girard Township including a public square that still exists today (known formally as “Ruffin Square”) as well as a library/school complex that is still used today (the current structure was completed in 1921). Additionally, he philanthropically donated much money towards important causes such as improving roads and bridges within township boundaries; this continues to be a keycomponentoflocal governance today! Following Ruffin's death in 1875, ownership of Girard passed through several families before it finally settled down with Mrs. Anna Ladderee on behalf of her husband Charles Ladderee Sr., son of Charles Ladderee Jr., founder of Lima Heights Village Shopping Center southwest of downtown Toledo.) Girard, Ohio is a small town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Girard was founded in 1812 as a trading post by General John Butler and his men during the Northwest Indian War. It became a station on the Underground Railroad and later became part of the Uniontown–Norwalk railway. The first settlers were French Huguenots who arrived from Quebec in 1811. They built cabins near present-day Girard Lake and began to cultivate maize and other crops. A Lutheran church was built in 1836 and it remains an important cultural center for the community today. In 1886, Girard organized its own school district which continue to operate today as Columbiana County Schools District No. 1A. As an agricultural community Girard developed significant livestock production including horses, cows, pigs, chickens, bees, corn (maize), wheat (barley), applesauce (oranges), onions, potatoes, beans and peanuts among others . The town also experienced manufacturing activity with early businesses such as a sawmill being established shortly after independence until 1865 when it closed due to financial difficulties . Manufacturing relapsed but has since resumed along with some new businesses . One notable recent business development has been the construction of a $14 million mixed-use project called "The Village" which will include residential units; retail space; office space; public works spaces; a daycare/seminary/golf course; and more . This project represents another example of how Girard has progressed from its history as an agricultural community to becoming one of Greater Columbus' most vibrant communities
The Girard community is located in the northwestern corner of Ohio, about 20 miles west of Cincinnati. It was founded by Quakers in 1796 and became a part of the United States in 1815. The town had a population of around 1,000 people at its peak in the 1830s. In 1858, it was renamed Girardstown after Samuel Girard, an early settler.
