Girard County, Ohio is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,564. The county seat is Girard. Girard was founded in 1824 and named for General Lafayette. It became a part of Indiana Territory in 1827 and then Kentucky Territory in 1830 before becoming part of Ohio Territory in 1836. In 1840, it was renamed for French general François de la Rochefoucauld-Lamaud who had died two years earlier at the age of 56 after a long military career that included service with both France and India. The county has a total area of 362 square miles (1,020 km²). Most of Girard County is on high ground along waterways such as the Zabriskie River and Monongahela River valleys which provide fertile land for agriculture while also providing views into surrounding counties to the north and east. In 1907, Girard became a county seat again when Vienna abandoned its claim to the position. The cotton industry played a big role in Girard’s development during the early years of its existence. Many families started out working on plantations near Petersburg or Jacksonville before moving their operations upriver to Girard where they developed into large businesses such as J & W Mills and New York Cotton Exchange Co., which still operates today.
Girard was founded in 1790 by John Girard and his wife, Judith. The town was named for John's ancestor, who had settled in the area in 1695. The Girards were the first to live in what is now Girard County. The present-day town of Girard was laid out in 1837 by James B. Lockwood and contains a population of about 1,000 people.
