In 1812, a group of men from the town of Girard, Ohio began to build rifles. The rifle was designed by Major John Sevier and Colonel John Brown. The rifles were called the “Girard Rifle” because it was built in their town. In 1836, Henry Colt began manufacturing firearms in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started making pistols as well but he wanted to make a more efficient firearm that could shot rounds accurately. He partnered with David Biddle and Jeremiah Dixon to start production on what became known as the Colt revolver. This weapon was used by American army soldiers during the Mexican-American War and also during the American Civil War. From 1848 until 1861, America’s most famous arms manufacturer – Colt – produced revolvers for both sides of the civil war at its factory in Hartford, Connecticut. During this time period, Colt also produced artillery weapons such as howitzers and artillery pieces for use by both armies. When America surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, Colt’s guns were among those surrendered along with other munitions supplies to England becoming part of British Crown Prince Edward VII’s armaments collection. After World War II ended in 1945, sales of firearms slowed down due to postwar regulation by the United States government banning certain types of firearms including handguns and shotguns
