Girard is a small town located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. Girard was platted in 1827 and named for General Pierre-Jean de Girard, who fought in the French and Indian War. The community was originally part of the Clinton Township system but became its own township in 1839. It was annexed by Franklin Township on April 4, 1847. The Girard Manufacturing Company was founded in 1916 by George W. Sheppard and his brother-in-law Sidney Sayers as a manufacturer of farm machinery and other agricultural products. The company went public in 1928 and reached its peak production during World War II with contracts from the United States armed forces. In 1945 the company merged with Ames Corporation to form Ames/Girard Corporation. By 2004 it had ceased operations as a result of economic conditions within the agricultural industry; however, it remains an important local employer today with over 200 employees across five factories that produce a wide variety of products including tractor parts, irrigation equipment, automotive parts and more. The first settler to arrive in what is now Girard were seven couples who came overland from Pennsylvania aboard the "Pioneer" on July 10, 1830; their boat reached larches (a type of laurel) near present day homeport about two miles below present day town line on Lake Erie's eastern shoreline In 1832 one group led by Captain John Green set up camp on high ground just east of present day town line; this site served as their meeting place for tribal council meetings until they built a better location about three miles west where they established a ferry dock which still stands today Captain James Kincaid (1798 -1864), one of America’s first white men to explore Cassville Lake area followed Captained John Green’s path two years later when he explored that area near present day village limits A post office called “Clinton” was established at what is now Girard on October 15th, 1830 under mail order from Philadelphia In 1840 Joshua Fry arrived from Holland via Buffalo Grove Landing along with his family On May 2nd he erected a log cabin at what is now homeport island southeast of current center Pierrepont Street while others built cabins north and west totaling 36 feet long x 16 feet wide x 8 feet deep . The following year saw an outbreak of yellow fever which caused many families to leave early for fear they would catch it alsoJoshua Fry erected his second cabin which still stands today $4 per head free for those coming ashore after dark making this spot one stopgapilletable solution till permanent harbor could be constructed . Girard, Ohio is a small town in the Toledo metropolitan area that dates back to 1824. A slave market operated here for many years until it was abolished by the United States Congress in 1865. The Girard post office was established in 1827 and still operates today. During the American Civil War, Girard sided with the Union and supplied soldiers and supplies. After the war, Girard became an agricultural center with a large corn crib, cotton gin, dairy, grocery store and several churches. In 1907, Girard voters passed a resolution declaring themselves part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
The Girard community was founded in 1825 by John and Mary Girard. The Girards were the first permanent settlers in what is now Ohio. In 1827, they became the owners of the land that would become Girard. The community grew quickly and soon had a school, Lutheran Church, a grocery store, and other businesses. In 1829, John Girard was elected to the Ohio State Senate. He served two terms before dying in office. His wife continued to run the business until her death in 1830. After John's death, his wife's son took over running the business until it merged with another local business in 1861 to form an incorporated company named Smith & Girard Company Limited
