Girard is located just south of the Canadian border on State Route 16 and is bordered by Licking County to the east, Trumbull County to the west and Sandusky County to the north. It was founded in 1836 by French-Canadian pioneers who named it for Saint-Jacques de Girard, a bishop in Quebec City who had fled persecution. In 1851, Girard became part of what would become Union Township. The first settler arrived in 1836, followed by five more that year. By 1840, there were twenty-one residents living in Girard. The town grew slowly until 1863 when it approved a local school district which later became Stark County School District No. 1. Growth accelerated during World War I with production of munitions and other wartime needs fueling demand for housing and businesses within Girard limits; these growth rates continued into the twenties and thirties as industry shifted from rural to urban areas throughout central Ohio. After World War II ended and job opportunities dwindled around Girard, many residents moved away or left for better economic prospects elsewhere during the postwar era; however, some remain today as retirees or immigrants looking for opportunity near downtown Cincinnati or Cleveland
