This new township was established in 2002 when portions of Massillon were annexed by Girard Township after being served by two separate villages: Maplewoodria/Fulton Heights (population: 2,895) which sat on the east side of Anthracite Ridge north of I-75; and Marietta/Beaver Dam (population: 3,716) located on the west side between I-475/Route 22 and US 40/State Route 422 just outside downtown Girardeau Avenue boundaries
Girard was founded in 1814 by Andrew Girard and his brothers. The village was named after Andrew's father, John Girard. In 1825, the Village of Girard became a town under the jurisdiction of the newly formed Cuyahoga County. The population of Girard grew rapidly from its initial population of just a few hundred people to over 1,000 by 1827. By 1830, Girard had become an important center for commerce and industry in Cuyahoga County. In 1835, Andrew Girard donated land to form what is now University Heights Cemetery. He also endowed the first school in what is now Girardeği (Girardeği School District) with $5,000 cash and 10 acres of land.
