Girard, Ohio is a small town in theuy of Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 787 at the 2010 census. Girard is located on the southern edge of Columbiana County and is east of the county's capital, Columbus. It is bordered to the north by Lebanon and to the south by Muskingum County. Girard was founded by Nicholas Girard in 1814 as a post office called Crawfordville. The first settler in what is now Girard was John Purdy in 1824. By 1840, Girard had two stores and five residents. In 1848, it became part of Athens Township when that township was created from parts of Columbiana and Muskingum counties. In 1870, Girard had four stores and ten residents; it became an unincorporated community within Athens Township again in 1898. The village of Girardeaux began as a Methodist church near where Girardeaux Lake now stands in 1902. That village merged with nearby Centerville in 1907 to form what is now known as Centerville-Girardeaux Village. The merger failed because Centerville wanted its own school district separate from Athens Township’s School District 2A; Centerville also wanted to annex into neighboring townships such as Lebanon and Medina while maintaining its own name for itself (the term "Centerville" still remains used today). In 1911, after much lobbied by members of both villages combined with letters from then-Governor Robert Bogan expressing his opposition to mergers between political subdivisions without due process being followed (a practice known as "zonation", which Governor Bogan opposed), Athens Township approved a resolution creating a new village called Girardeaux East on land adjacent to Centerville-Girardeaux Village since those two villages were already so intertwined politically that they could no longer be considered independent entities anymore (although other parts of Athenztown continued to be Unincorporated Communities). This annexation resulted in the town's incorporation as Girard upon becoming official government business; it had previously been an unincorporated community under Greek name Although most people associate girardi with centerville or girardeaux village (due mainly to their namesakes having similar boundaries), there are actually several neighborhoods/vilages located within or around these two communities: Gibbs Woods off Center road just outside centerville proper; White Oaks off Middlebrook Rd., right before you reach centerville eastbound exit 12 ; Hunters Ridge Golf Club off Springdale Rd.; Thornhill behind Dollar General store on State Street just beyond center road - these all share one common ZIP code - 14822

Girard was founded in 1796 by George Girard and his wife, Sarah. The town is named for General Jean-Baptiste de Girard, who fought in the French and Indian War. The first store in Girard opened in 1802. The town became a battleground during the American Revolution as British forces attacked several times. In 1795, Girard erected a monument to General John Starkman, who had been killed while fighting with the patriots. After the war, Girard grew prosperous thanks to its location on the Great Lakeshore and its abundant natural resources. In 1846, Girard became one of the thirty townships within Ohio's newly created University Township system. It was here that Indiana University first established itself as an institution of learning. In 1957, voters passed a resolution recognizing November 11th as America's Columbus Day. Today, Girard continues to play an important role in Ohio history as a vibrant community with much to offer visitors and residents alike.
Girard was founded in 1824 by Col. George Girard and his wife, Nancy. The Girards had arrived in the area from Vermont the year before. Their farmstead, which is still in operation today, was located on a small stream that flowed through their land. They raised livestock and grew crops. In 1829, they built a gristmill on the stream and began to produce flour for local markets. In 1850, they added a two-story frame house to their property and named it the Girard House. Colonel Girard died in 1856 and his wife continued to live there until her death in 1865. The house remained home until it was sold to Phillips Manufacturing Company of Dayton in 1922. It then passed through several hands before being purchased by the Ohio State Historical Society in 1951. As part of its restoration project, the Ohio State Historical Society erected a new porch around 1905 that remains today as one of the remaining original features of the Girard House
