John had the idea to create a town in what was then the bottom of the hill and he named it after himself, Girard Heights. In 1855, Girard became sheriff of Lake County and began to produce holsters. Around this time, he also started an ammunition store. In 1865, he married Fannie May French and opened a home as a hotel in what is now the downtown area of Girard. In 1893, J W Hickey founded HCN Ammunition Company with offices in Girard. This company produced rounds for both revolvers and shotguns until 1941 when it merged into Brownells Incorporated. In 1911, Clarence Cramer took over HCN Ammunition Company from J W Hickey and ran it until his death in 1961. From 1911-1941 HCN Ammunitionproduced rounds for both handguns ( revolvers)and rifles (shotguns). During World War IIHCN Ammunitionproduction switched to producing rounds for pistols only due to wartime restrictions on rifle ammunition production
Girard is a town in Logan County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The Girard School District serves Girard and the unincorporated communities of Cedar Hill and Perrysburg. Girard was founded by John Girard in 1795. It was named for him and his wife Martha (née Thompson). The first settler in what is now Girard Township was Peter McGowan in 1800. A post office called Girard was established in 1805, and remained open until 1837. In 1825, local fur trader Daniel Boone traveled through the area on his way to meet General Andrew Jackson at Oxford Landing on the Scioto River. He named a creek after himself, Boone Creek. In 1834, Girard became part of Logan County when it was organized from parts of Scioto Township and Athens Township. The first courthouse building in what is now Girard Township was built around this time. In 1840, a schoolhouse also became part of the district; it remains standing today as an example of early 20th century architecture. By 1860, there were more than 60 residents living in Girardtownships- some 15% of the county's total population then. 2nd Wardman Bros., grist Mill In 1861 Hiram Keyes erected a grist mill on lands he had acquired east of present day US Highway 20 near Perrysburg Lake which went into operation that year along with another Keyes mill located just south off State Route 8 about one mile west of current day girardehoek Road between Highways 33& 34
