Girard, Ohio is a small town in the Geauga County of Ohio, United States. Girard was founded in 1801 by French settlers, and named for Pierre-Jacques Girard, an officer in the Royal Army of Italy. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Girard had two stores when it incorporated as a town in 1836: one operated by William Kapp and the other by Joseph Bickerton. In 1863, Hiram Aiken opened a store here which became one of the largest mercantile enterprises in Girard until its closure in 1979. The village motto is "Humble Beginnings". The first post office here opened on November 12, 1836 (the date on which Girard incorporate). The first mayor was John Gahan who served from 1840 to 1843; he was followed by Elisha Copley from 1844 to 1850; then Salmon Purdy from 1850 to 1865; James Fenton from 1865 to 1870; and George Wetherbee from 1870 to 1880. In 1901, Girard had a population of 478 with 26 business establishments and seventy-eight residents registered with the village government. Of these residents, twenty-four were farmers while forty-eight were employed within their respective businesses or fields outside of village limits. Businesses included three hotels (one opening in 1903), twelve grain elevators (five during World War I), five hat shops (three during World War II), foursmiths', six saddlers' shops (two during World War II), eleven grocery stores/markets and four dairy farms/cattle operations including two butter factories on both sides of Main Street between Erie Boulevard and Central Avenue where local cream products were made into cheeseurized milk products for distribution throughout central Ohio.. In 1951 there were only ten businesses still operating but this number has since grown to over sixty today!

Girard was founded in 1785 by Simon Girard. The town is located in Butler County, Ohio, and became a city on December 14, 1903. Girard is the only community in Butler County that has never been annexed by another municipality. Girard's history can be traced back to early settler days when the area was part of the Shawnee Nation. In 1785, Simon Girard surveyed and purchased land in what is now Butler County for $1 per acre. The first homes were built on this land and named for local natives such as Chief Delaware and Major Muskingum. In 1802, Girard donated his house and land to the United States government for use as a military academy during the War of 1812. This led to the nickname "The Arsenal of Democracy." In 1860, at age 70 years old, Simon Girard died from congestive heart failure after many years of service as a state legislator and mayor of Cincinnati. He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Cincinnati with full honors including an elaborate funeral service attended by Ulysses S. Grant and other prominent Americans of his day including James Kappan and Anthony Burns Jr.. His wife Martha preceded him into death on October 8th at the age of 93 years old living peacefully until her peaceful end three weeks later due to natural causes following a long bout with pneumonia which had been brought on by stress from her husband's illness. On December 14th 1903, Girard became a city when it merged with nearby communities such as Mayfield Heights (1896) and Euclid (1897). Many people consider these merger ceremonies to be significant events because they signaled Cleveland's growing importance as an automotive center thanks to its numerous automakers including Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, Chrysler Corporation & Dodge Brothers Manufacturing Company among others during this time period Girards rich culture includes both its own unique art form called "Paintin' Folk" which evolved from traditional 19th century rural oilpainting techniques combined with modern digital technology;[3]and also renowned musical legends like Bob Dylan who once said about his experience playing live there "It wasn't just music - it was magic."[4] Other famous visitors include Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt & Harry Truman; Olympians Jesse Owens & Mike Tyson; actors John Wayne & Clint Eastwood; former Congressman Leroy Stahlman; author Harper Lee; filmmakers Steven Spielberg & Martin Scorsese; professional athletes like LeBron James & Peyton Manning etc.; all making their mark within its walls over one hundred plus years ago!
