The town declined in importance during its heyday, but it has since regained some of its former prominence as a cultural and historical center. George Girard was born in France in 1765 to an English family who had migrated to America several years earlier. After studying law under his father, he moved to England to practice law before coming back to America and settling in Philadelphia. He married Anne Hathaway, who was from a prominent family there. They returned to America and started their own practice together in Philadelphia. George Girard soon found himself involved with various business ventures and investments; he is credited with being one of the first Americans to establish what is now called venture capitalism. He also played an important role in developing Pennsylvania's railways system.
