However, some gunners continued to favor traditional sighting devices such as eyelets and pegs into the stock of their guns until at least World War II.

Girard, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Buckeye State. The population was 9,477 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH metropolitan area. Girard was founded in 1814 by Jean-Baptiste Girard and his family. The town became a national historical center for education in 1907 when Girard's son Jean-Marie founded the first high school in America in that year. The community also hosted an annual fair from 1876 to 1986.Today, Girard rests on its laurels as a thriving educational and economic center with five schools (four public and one private), two businesses (one hospital and one restaurant), two churches (Anglican and Methodist) and more than fifty residents who enjoy agriculture, fishing, skiing, golfing, tennis, horseback riding, biking or simply spending time outdoors. The history of Girard can be traced back to 1814 when Jean Baptiste Girard settled here with his family after moving from Pontoise France. In that year he built a log cabin on what is now Main Street which served as their home until they moved to what is currently West Adams Avenue in 1819. At that time it was still part of Trumbull County under British rule so there were no roads nor any means for trade between Trumbull County and other parts of Ohio except by boat or wagon which required months for travel! In 1798 French explorer Pierre Gassendi journeyed through this area on his way to find new land east of Lake Erie; he named this area "Girarde" after the village near Amiens where he stopped for supplies while exploring central Quebec Province. After Gassendi's exploration failed to reveal any virgin land east of Ontario Lakes he abandoned all hope of finding new territory within our borders but continued northward into neighboring states such as Michigan Territory where he discovered rich deposits of coal! This led him to name his new settlement "Girarde" after this important discovery! In 1799 John Beecham arrived at Stroudsburg Township along with twenty men who had followed him overland from Canada during Beaver Wars era; they were charter members of First Presbyterian Church located today at Fourth Street & High Street in downtown Cincinnati! Beecham quickly realized that there wasn't much land available outside Trumbull County so he began construction on what would become Beecham’s House – now known as Second Presbyterian Church – soon thereafter serving as both church headquarters and township meeting house until 1800 when county seat was moved from Trumbull to Dayton! It wasn't until 1802 when William Richardson arrived hereabouts along with several others seeking claim to lands grants given them by Thomas Jefferson during War Department process known as Third Treaty Of Paris following Battle Of Fallen Timbers aka American Indian Removal Act!!! Richardson purchased 640 acres northeast corner Broad Ripple Road & Elm Avenue from Chief Joseph Whitehead alias Delaware Tecumseh belonging to Shawnee Nation!! This purchase made him one of the most powerful men in central Ohio!!! It should be noted that only 2% - 3%of total acreage ownership by white settlers remained undeveloped throughout entire Northwest Territory subsequent TO American Indian Removal Act!!! On October 7th 1802 William Richardson erected upon high ground just west side current day Vineyard Rd., about three miles southwest OF present day Greenbank Rd., a large wooden frame structure bearing date July 25th 1800–the first courthouse building erected west of Miami Valley Creek!!!!! Just days later Mr.Richards metamorphosed into successful businessman/builder/developer/inventor/managing partner (& wife) Mary Ann Randolph opposite Riverfront Park downtown Dayton….. resulting Trinity Episcopal Church adjacent block WEST OF GREENBAKER RD………. Now Mrs Randolph’s memory marks East Greenbank Ave SW corner SSE corner WNW corner NW corner AVEW

Girard was founded in 1812 as a town in the northern part of Ohio. The name comes from French Girard, meaning "a rock outcropping." The town grew quickly and by 1836 had a population of 2,000 people. In 1838, Girard became an incorporated village. The village developed into a large city by the early 20th century. In 1870, Girard became the capital of Ohio after Toledo was annexed by the state. After World War I ended, Girard experienced increased growth due to its location on the Great Lakes region and its status as a commercial center for the Midwest. However, during the 1920s and 1930s Girard struggled with economic problems and declining revenue. In 1937, Girard merged with other villages in central Ohio to form Cleveland-Girardsville. Despite this merger, however, many residents continued to identify with their former hometown throughout much of the next decade. By 1941, when Cleveland-Girardsville was renamed Cleveland Municipal Corporation (CMC), most residents still identified with Girard as their primary residence. The city's post-war years were relatively prosperous thanks to new investment and industrialization; however, this prosperity stopped abruptly after 1946 when CMC began losing money through overspending on infrastructure projects such as water supplies and public transportation expansions that did not meet market demands or justify the high costs associated with them. Finally bankrupted in 1957, CMC sold off portions of its assets including Girard to local businessmen for $1 million dollars in what is considered one of the largest municipal bankruptcy cases in history at that time. Although some aspects of downtown girarde remain active today (such as The Gilded Cage restaurant), overall it has been largely abandoned due to concerns about redevelopment pressures from nearby suburbs which have taken away much of what made it unique and attractive to retirees or businesses seeking an urban edge while still remaining within commuting range for both workers and students alike
Girard was a small community in northwestern Ohio located on the Scioto River. It was founded in 1810 by James Girard and his wife Sarah, who had emigrated from England. The Girards operated a ferry service across the river until 1827. In 1831, they erected a log cabin as their home, which served as the town's first schoolhouse. The Girards also built a sawmill and gristmill in the village. They sold their holdings in Girard to John Akeley in 1872 and withdrew from town government. In 1886, Girard was incorporated as an independent city with a population of sixty-five people. The city became an unincorporated community again following its dissolution in 1907.
