Girard is a small town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima–Canton, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Girard was laid out in 1802 by Elijah Girard and named for his older brother Pierre Girard. The first settler in what would become Girard was Emile Fenton, who arrived about 1800. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Little Miami River. In 1815, John Wilkinson started plowing a furrow through the forest and discovered coal and iron ore near where Girard now stands. He became known as "the father of Girard." In 1827, James Ford bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of Girard from Wilkinson. The following year he came up with the idea to build a mill on the Little Miami River because no one had done it before. Ford built a sawmill and conducted business until 1840 when he sold his interest to George Westphalen. The mill continued operating until 1865 when it burned down due to arson; however, Westphalen rebuilt it within two years and it continued running until 1888 when it burned again due to fire code violations. Fremont & Company ran an elevator company from 1903-1960 which transported goods up and down the Little Miami River from their mill site just east of town proper (now part of Village Park). There were 4 hotels in town: 3 managed by Fremont & Company and one by American Hotels Corporation; 1 hotel operated by Hiram Lodge; 2 restaurants served food all day long including a movie theater that screened movies evenings only; 1 store closed around 1960; 1 post office open from 1907-1918 Girard has been home to twice as many people asowntown Lima since 2000 according to Census data included herein In 1870-, there were 9 farmers living alone on farms averaging over 12 acres each," meaning that these farmers were large landowners who could afford more than one barn or other building utilized for housing during this time period" However," starting around 1930" ,"farmers' average size decreased significantly(to 6 acres), while larger landowners began subdividing their land into smaller lots with individual houses"(Powell). This decrease may reflect increased competition among farmers for resources such as water or marketable acreage closer to cities.(Powell) One possible explanation for this decrease might be that families stopped raising animals because they could no longer get them enough feed or because they found other ways to provide income.(Baker) Another factor which might have contributed to this trend is that many farm families lost their land after World War II when developers took advantage of farmland prices collapsed.(Ferguson) Finally, another factor which could explain why median farm size has decreased might be related to changes in technology which have made growing crops more difficult(Moses). For example, irrigation systems have made farming less important since early 20th century innovations like canals allowed for large amounts of variety in products grown using traditional methods(Hanson).
