Girard, Ohio is a small town in southern Ohio. The population was 3,853 at the 2000 census. Girard is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles south of Cleveland on I-480. The town was founded in 1828 by Pierre Girard as a cluster of log cabins on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. By 1830, Girard had erected a sawmill and store on what is now Main Street. In 1835, Girard married Emma Smedley and began to grow hisown agricultural products which he marketed through local stores. In 1856, Girard built a two-story frame schoolhouse with funds provided by his family members and friends. That year also saw the first publication in Girard when pastor Amos Kendall published "The Gospel Advocate" from an office formerly used by Postmaster General John Prentice Howe. In 1862, Henrietta (Hennie) Smith moved to Girardi from her native Vermont with her three children and started a grocery store next door to the school house that would serve as the nucleus for present day Edwards Grocery Corporation which still operates today as one of downtown's oldest businesses. In 1865, Henrietta married Wm Hennessey who owned another grocery store downriver from her original business venture. Between 1865 and 1870, Hennessey operated three grocery stores within sight of each other in what is now known as South Euclid Avenue between First Street (now Ontario Avenue) eastward to Clinton Avenue northward - all within walking distance of their respective homes! Henrietta's husband Wm ran into financial difficulties after selling his last grocery store in 1870 and died childless some years later at age 78 years old; leaving Henrietta sole proprietor/operatorof Edwards Grocery Corporation until its sale to J&R Knoppers Incorporated in 1984). From then until 1984 when it became part of Wise Foods Corp., Edwards Grocery Corporation was one of America’s largest privately held grocers serving more than 12 million customers annually throughout its nearly 150 year history! Today’s downtown area owes much debt to early settlers Pierre Girardeau (1828-1865), Henriette Smith (1865-1960), Wm Hennessey (1870-1954), James Melson & Sons Incorporated (1955-1984) and Jay Knoppers Jr.(1984-) who along with other entrepreneurs helped make modern day Girardi an important community hub within Greater Cleveland!

The population of Girard was 17 when it incorporated as a village in 1902. It grew to over 2400 residents by 1960 and has remained constant at this number since then. Today, Girard is home to several manufacturing businesses and other small businesses that support its citizens. There are also several public schools within reach for local children and adults.
