Girard, Ohio is home to the Girard Arsenal, one of the most famous gun magazines in America. The magazine was started by James W. Girard in 1884 and has been published continuously since then. The arsenal is currently closed but it will be open in 2019 as part of the Ohio History Center’s “Gun Magazine Collection” exhibit. The Girard Arsenal was founded on October 17, 1884 by James W. Girard. It was located on State Route 10 between Sandwich and Lebanon Roads and produced munitions for both the United States Army and local militias. In its early years, the armory produced single-shot pistols, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, and artillery pieces. In 1916, Girard merged with the Dayton Armory to form Dayton Arsenal & Machine Works Incorporated (DAMW). DAMW continued producing munitions until 1947 when it became a subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRAC). In 1951 WRAC merged with Colt Armaments Corporation to form Colt Firearms Corporation (CFLC). At this point DAMW reverted back to its original name: Girard Arsenal & Machine Works Incorporated (GAMAW). A few months later GAMAW merged into MAS Seating Co., Ltd., a Japanese arms manufacturer which had bought GAMAW stock two years earlier. Today GAMAW is an adjunct of shooting club ASRDS-Ohio LLC which operates it as an all-purpose firearms store/rental facility located just off I-71 on State Route 727 east of Lima Township in Union County. It also maintains archives related to firearm manufacturing from Colonial America through World War II including handguns made at the armory as well as ammunition types used there during those years

The modern cartridge magazine is really only a recent invention, dating back to the early 1800s when lead-based ammunition became available. The practice of loading cartridges into an old muzzleloader or rifle would often result in numerous “rounds left in the magazine” as rounds would not fit into any individual chamber. This led to the development of new types of magazines which allowed cartridges to be loaded one at a time into specially constructed chambers within their body. One such innovation was developed by John Brownell and Sons who patented their design in 1887. Their invention involved a system whereby cartridges were slid into wells located insideof specially designed cases that housed both the percussion cap and striker. These cases also contained a spring mechanism which permitted them to remain closed during transportation thereby preventing spoilage and loss of function. In 1916, Brownells company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company and continued production under that name until 1949 when it reverted to its original name – Winchester Magazine & Supply Co.. However, Winchester ceased manufacturing All-Purpose Ammunition (APA) products in 1998 so all current APA ammunition is produced by Hornady Ammunition Division Inc..

Girard was founded in 1818 by Nicholas Girard and his wife, Sarah. The Girards were settlers who migrated from the French-Canadian province of Quebec. They built a log cabin on a creek that they named after their ancestor, Pierre Girard. In 1824, the Girards had two children, John and Nancy. John married Eliza Foote and they had one child, Fanny. In 1827, the Girards bought land east of town and started farming it. In 1830, they organized a school that taught students from grade 1 to 12. The first post office was established in 1831 and the first store was opened in 1836. The town grew rapidly throughout the 1840s due to its location along the great Miami River Valley (now part of Lucas County). In 1850, Nicholas Girard died and bequeathed his entire estate to his son John as well as $5 million cash which he called "the girard money". The elder Girard's widow Sarah continued to run the business until her death in 1865; she left behind an extensive legacy including an art museum and several thousand acres of farmland west of town where she raised horses until her death in 1901. John Girard passed away in 1889 leaving his entire fortune to his daughter Nancy which she used for various charitable purposes before passing it down to her son Howard Hughes in 1946 when Hughes became owner of United States Airlines (US Airways).
