Girard, Ohio is home to the Girard Arsenal Historic Site, which has been serving as a museum since 1907. The site includes an arsenal made up of three buildings and twenty-six guns. It also contains a collection of artillery equipment and cannons from throughout the nineteenth century. The arsenal was initially built to store munitions for the local militia. However, it soon became well known for its firearms production. From 1814 until 1828, Girard Arsenal produced over 1,000 rifles and pistols. Additionally, the site produced cannon pieces and naval cannon from 1793 until 1861. The arsenal was closed in 1861 due to financial difficulties. However, it reopened in 1867 as the Municipal Armory of Girard Township. In 1938 it was renamed again to the Girard Arsenal Historic Site in honor of Major General Charles Cotesworth Marshall III (1821-1906).Marshall played an important role in leading United States forces during World War I and World War II. He is also credited with helping develop American fire control systems during those wars.

In 1865, the company became part of the American Arms Manufacturing Company. American Arms merged with National Firearms in 1978. The current name of the company is Girard Manufacturing Corporation.
Girard, Ohio is a small community located in the southeast corner of Lake County, Ohio. The population was 2,591 at the 2010 census. Girard is part of the Akron-Canton metropolitan area. The town was founded by French traders in 1797 and named for Jacques Giraud, one of their number. The first settler in what would become Girard was Deacon John France who arrived with his family in 1800. By 1814 there were twenty five families living here and two churches were built that year. In 1827, an act of the United States Congress created the Township of Girard out of part of Muskingum County. In 1828, a post office was established here and mail from Athens reached Girard via wagon road. In 1829, frame buildings began to be erected on Main Street which became known as "The Square." In 1850, when Ohio became a state, Girard had a population of just ninety four people and twelve businesses including three stores and three woolen mills . However within 10 years it had increased to over 1,200 people with over sixty businesses including eleven stores and six woolen mills . The population growth led to increased competition for land and development which caused several store closings in 1860 but also saw construction beginning on what would become known as "The Square" – now home to many shops and restaurants today.
In the early 1700s, guns were primarily used as war machines. Ammunition was expensive and hard to come by, so soldiers relied on handguns to shoot at close range. The earliest handguns were designed for use with fowling arrows. By the end of the seventeenth century, pistols had become more common and were being used to shoot balls at long distances. In 1635, a Spanish soldier named Hernán Cortés discovered new territory in Mexico and decided to explore it with his army. He brought a firearm with him and began shooting targets in an attempt to learn about the area. Soon after, he discovered that firearms could be used for hunting animals and decided to take advantage of this fact. After conquering much of Mexico, Cortés founded what is now El Paso de Santa Fe in 1646 as part of his holdings in what is now Texas. From here, he began exploring new areas of North America and started trading with Native Americans. One day while outfitting his troops for a campaign against the Aztecs, Cortés encountered a group of Indians who were using bows and arrows instead of swords for hunting purposes. He became interested in this new technology and ordered his forces to start using them too. This led to the beginning of gunpowder farming which allowed Europeans to arm themselves properly against native Americans without having to purchase large quantities of ammunition from India or Africa
