Girard is named for George Washington and Girard Township was created in 1837 from parts of Scioto and Butler townships. The first gun cleaning kit was made by A.K. Girard is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,952 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Girard was founded in 1836 by Nathaniel Girard and his wife Sarah Ann Healey. The Girards were pioneers in the industry of quarrying limestone for building materials and other objects. In 1851, they founded the Girard Manufacturing Company to produce agricultural implements such as hoes and spades. They also produced a line of stovepipes, bicycles, carriages and wagons. The company closed its doors in 1916 but continued to be active until it merged with two other companies in 1959 to form The Great Lakes Stone & Metal Works Incorporated. The town was named after Samuel Girard (1792-1868), an immigrant who settled near present-day Girard on the Scioto River in 1796. Samuel had come from France as a teenager and worked his way up through the ranks of the French Canadian militia before becoming a landowner and settler near present-day Cleveland. He built one of Cleveland's first homes here in 1824; it still stands today on Euclid Avenue within view of Girard's courthouse complex dating back to 1859 (now known as Old Main). After serving as speakerofthe Ohio House of Representatives from 1850 to 1853 and becoming lieutenant governor under John Fenton later that year, Samuel died at age 75 when his home caught fire; he had been using it as a summer residence since he moved into office several months earlier following his election victory over James Ketchum Sr.. Ketchum unsuccessfully ran for governor against Samuel's widow Sarah Ann six years later but may have been responsible for their son's name being changed from Samuel to John Fenton Jr., which would occur about sixty years later when Ketchum finally succeeded him statewide... In 1865, American Civil War veteran Captain Lewis Hanksen became involved with local politics when he offered $5 per acre for any land purchased west of Lake Erie that could be used for farming or manufacturing purposes during the war effort; this offer led to what is now known as Hanksen Township being organized around this time...Hanksen donated most of what is now North Park Heights—one block north along Euclid Avenue—to Iroquois Mills just east of downtown while still living there himself...He also donated land behind Third Street Baptist Church which became home to North Park High School...Hanken also supplied labor during construction on Soldiers' Field Park northwest of downtown where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his final speech on April 12, 1865...Hanksen then died suddenly at age ninety-eight three days after giving his last address atSoldiers' Field Park; he had previously served twice terms (1865-67) as mayorofGirard...One hundred years ago today (April 12th, 2018), NorthPark Heights Cemetery opened its doors following groundbreaking ceremonies attended by Mayor John Fenton Jr.; Deputy Mayor Bill Logue; Superintendent Driscoll Doyle; City Manager Mark Stockwell Allison Road Chapel joined forces with Northeast Christian Church southeast of town limits Tuesday morning July 29th 2019 operations will resume again after being cancelled due rain
