During their stay in Paris, Voltaire and his wife Jeanette were followed by several residents of Girard who called themselves "the maires" or mayors because they held some sort of political power there. These individuals wanted to know what kind of reforms Voltaire would propose for their municipality which bordered Montmartre Cemetery on one side and Notre Dame Cathedral on the other. Eventually these officials became known as "the Girards." One important part of their role was helping to found local newspapers such as Le Monde Français and Le Vierge Républicain which promoted Enlightenment values within their communities. After Voltaire's death in 1700, most members of his entourage moved back to France but Jeanette continued living with her husband until his death six years later at the age Of 83 years old (Voltaire himself died just over two years after this). She then married another Frenchman named François Joseph Sieyès who also spent time visiting America before dying there aged 78 years old in 1821.) Jeanette Nicholl now lives near her son Louis-René Nicholl III near Ottawa, Ontario where she continues working towards preserving voltairian heritage artifacts dating back more than 200 years!

It grew to over 1,000 by the end of the 19th century. Girard was destroyed by fire on July 6, 1892, as part of an effort to build a new sawmill in nearby Toledo.
