Girard is a city in, and the county seat of, Girard County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. The Girard community takes its name from Jean-Baptiste Girard who settled there in 1811. The first European to visit what is now Girard County was Jacques Marquette in 1679. A group of Frenchmen and Indians led by Captain Pierre Le Moyne explored the area in 1785 and named it for General François de La Salle. In 1811, Jean-Baptiste Girard founded the town of Girard on a tract of land he had bought from the government for $2 per acre (0.60 kg/ha). He built a log cabin and called his settlement "Girard." In 1815, Henry Clay moved his family to this area from Ironton Township. They began small potato farming but soon realized that they needed more land so they purchased an additional three acres (1 ha) in 1817. This helped make possible their famous Donation Land Act of 1819 which gave US citizens incentive to settle west of the Allegheny Mountains. The townspeople started building homes early on but it wasn't until after the Civil War that they really got started on their development process. One reason why they waited so long was because much of their equipment and supplies had been lost during the war effort. By 1865, most of the buildings had been erected including two churches - oneMethodist and one Catholic - schoolhouse with a handsome additions such as an attic above each wing for storage; four stores; three blacksmiths; two printers; six soldiers stationed at Fort Atkinson; houseboat No 1 used by troops Landing at Cincinnati Harbor for transportation ashore On 4 October 1865 local paper announced "the final erection"of Butler's Wharf--one hundred years ago today!
