Girard, Ohio is a town in the Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Scioto River and its namesake Girard Avenue runs through it. Girard was founded in 1814 by French-Canadian settlers as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1819, Girard became part of the United States and was renamed for François Girard, a French general during the American Revolution who had died in 1794. The first store in town was built by Jacob Whitacre in 1825 and he continued to operate it until his death in 1840. Other early businesses included an optometrist’s office established in 1829 and a grocery store built by George Guraldine in 1830. The townspeople developed an economy based on farming with small manufacturing facilities including a millinery shop and two blacksmiths’ shops from 1839 to 1945. In 1860, Girard became one of nine townships within Wayne County when it was created from parts of Summit and Athens Counties. The township has since been doubled in size twice more (to 21 square miles) with no change to its population or demographics; however, Girard has seen continual growth due to its location on Interstate 71 between Cleveland and Akron – which has led to suburban development around it over the years (known as "the girardeau effect"). In 1954, after being annexed into Summit Township, Girard voted overwhelmingly not to secede from Wayne County because they saw that as an opportunity for their community to grow larger while still maintaining its unique identity; this policy continued until 1975 when Summit Township merged into Cleveland Heights Township. In 1998, Indianola Township formed within Cleveland Heights Township after being detached from Lakewood Township following approval by voters there; this move also increased Greenville's population significantly as Indianola is home to most of Greenville's heavy industry (manufacturing jobs make up 60% of the township's workforce). The first store was built on Main Street in 1802 and the first post office opened in 1805. In 1821, Girard became a part of the newly formed Lucas County, Ohio. In 1907, the town population reached 910 residents and it became a city in 1912.
