Girard is a small town located in the Muskingum County, Ohio area. The population was 918 at the 2010 census. Girard was founded by pioneer John Girard in 1828 and named for him. The community has grown since then and now includes a shopping center, post office, public school, two churches, and several businesses. The first settler in Girard was John Girard who arrived in 1828. He married Hannah Slaughter and started a farm near present-day Girard with his wife and three children. Over the years, other pioneers followed suit including Jacob[?] Hoadley in 1830; Ebenezer Cook in 1834; Amos Sibley in 1840; Edward Smith in 1845; Israel Sprague & son Samuel Sprague Jr. on October 3, 1850; David Guthrie on November 8th of that year[?]; Nathaniel Whitehead on December 2nd of that year[?]; George Washington Slagle on January 1st of 1851[?]; Josiah Witherspoon on February 12th of that year[?]. On July 6, 1861,[4] during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down the Union Steamship "Queenstown" off the coast of Muskingum County after it refused to turn over any prisoners to Confederate authorities. This event is generally considered to be the start of what is known as "Girard's War". The townspeople raised money to rebuild their ship which they did not have enough money for however they still managed to hold out against repeated Confederate bombardments until 1863 when they finally surrendered unconditionally.[5] In 1870,[6] America's first water main was laid through town by Cyrus Marshall while he was working as engineer for Toledo Hudson Waterworks Company Engineering Division.[7] On May 10th of that same year,[8] Stonington Township became part of Girard Township after being organized from parts of Muskingum Township which had seceded from Ohio during the American Civil War.[9][10][11][12][13] At this time there were only six residents living in town although it had an estimated total population of about 150 people due largely to immigration from Ireland and Germany throughout Reconstruction period following slavery ended across America.[14][15][16][17](The reason why so few people lived here during this time cannot be determined with certainty.) One significant event that took place around this time included construction beginning on what would become known as "the girder bridge".[18] This $5 million project links downtown Girard with Interstate 75/US Route 20 northbound via a steel girder bridge which opened onto Main Street just south of Centerville Road on October 7th, 1951.(?) It remains oneofthe most photographed landmarks in town today.
