Girard is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 736 at the 2010 census. Girard was founded in 1827, and named for Jacques Girard, a French officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The town developed as a farmers' and mercantile center on the western edge of the county. It became an incorporated village in 1902. The first settler in Girard was Pierre-André Thibault, who arrived from Quebec in 1792 and built a cabin on the east side of the creek that later became Girard Creek. In 1827, Jacques Girard moved to this area and began to farm land which he donated to the community. By 1830, there were around 20 people living in Girard. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near other settlements on both sides of the county line – it had access to water resources and mills along with several churches and schools. In 1902, Girard merged with neighbouring towns of Northfield (now West Bloomfield) and Sheffield (now Shaker Heights). These two municipalities form what is now Mahoning County's third largest city by population size – Northfield has increased its population by over 100%, while Sheffield has shrunk by almost 50%. Despite this growth slowdown, however, Girard remains one of Mahoning County's most vibrant communities with active businesses and a thriving cultural scene.
Girard was founded in 1810 by John Girard and his wife, Sarah. The town site had been donated by the Girards to the township of Girard for development. In 1822, the township became a village and in 1828, it was renamed Girard Heights. On July 1, 1907, Girard Township merged with the Village of Girard Heights to form the current Borough of Girard.
